CHANDLER, Ariz. — Senior Lisa Persson finished in third place and sophomore Rockelle Sande tied for fourth to help Sacramento State to a second-place team finish at the Big Sky Women's Golf Championship on Tuesday.
The Hornets entered the final round tied for first place but ended up 15 strokes behind Portland State after the Vikings totaled 290 on Tuesday compared to a 305 for Sacramento State.
Persson was even during the third round with three birdies and three bogeys. The senior opened with birdies on the par-5 first and par-4 third to help the team to a quick start. She made the turn even following bogeys on Nos. 6 and 8. On the back nine, Persson birdied the par-5 11th to get to 1-under before bogeying the par-4 13th.
Sande capped her lowest 54-hole tournament score of her career by shooting 76-72-77-225 to tie for fourth. The finish was her first among the top five during her collegiate career. On Tuesday, she was 1-under at the midway point of her round with birdies on Nos. 1 and 9 and a bogey on the par-4 second. She was even through 14 holes but saw her round slip away with double bogeys on Nos. 15 and 17 and a bogey on No. 16.
Tiffany Nichols and Sagee Palavivatana each shot 78 to account for the final two team scores for Sacramento State in the third round. Nichols had five bogeys over her first nine holes but played the back nine at just 1-over with a bogey on the par-4 15th and eight pars. Her total of 75-80-78-233 placed her 17th overall.
Palvivatana tied for 18th after rounds of 81-75-78-234. On Tuesday, she was 3-over on both sides of the course with nearly identical marks. The junior birdied the par-5 sixth and par-4 14th to go along with eight bogeys.
Freshman Chloe Bartek tied for 22nd after shooting 78-78-80-236.
Portland State's A Ram Choi was the medalist and finished at 5-under par (70-74-67-211). Her 7-stroke margin of victory tied the largest in Big Sky Championship history.
