WOMEN'S GOLF FINISHES FIFTH; BRAKEL SETS CAREER LOW

CHANDLER, Ariz. — The Sacramento State women's golf finished in fifth place at the Big Sky Championship on Tuesday at Ocotillo Golf Resort. The Hornets shot 303 in the final round and were 22 strokes off the play of champion Northern Arizona.

Senior Kercia Brakel had the best individual finish among Sacramento State golfers, tying for fifth place and setting her career record for low round and low 54-hole score. Brakel finished the tournament at 1-over par with rounds of 73-71-71. Her total of 217 was nine strokes behind medalist Paige Crawford of Montana State (73-68-67-208). Brakel was only two shots out of second place.

Brakel was again sparked by a great start where she parred her first eight holes before a birdie on the par-4 ninth. Her ninth par of the round came before a birdie on the par-5 11th. However, she moved to even after bogeys on Nos.12 and 14 and remained their until a birdie on the par-5 18th.

Tiffany Nichols and Lisa Perrson each shot 76 in the final round to tie for the second best score on the team. Nichols tied for 20th overall while Persson tied for 26th. In the final round, Nichols had four pars and three bogeys over her first seven holes. She then traded birdies and bogeys over the next four holes and was 3-over through 11. Her final seven holes consisted of six pars and a bogey on the par-4 15th.

Persson bogeyed her first hole and after three pars added a birdie on the par-4 fifth. She returned to 1-over with a bogey on the par-4  eighth where she remained at the turn. On the back nine, she had six pars and three bogeys.

The final score counted toward the team total on Tuesday came from Natalie Bodnar who shot 80. Bodnar had had 10 pars and eight bogeys and tied for 38th overall. Sagee Palavivatana tied for 26th after shooting 75-76-82-233.
