WOMEN'S GOLF OPENS PLAY AT FRESNO STATE LEXUS CLASSIC
FRESNO, Calif. — Lexie Hall's second round 73 was the best score of the day for the Sacramento State women's golf team at the Fresno State Lexus Classic on Monday at Copper River Country Club.
The Hornets sit in 15th place and are 29 strokes behind Tulsa for the team lead heading into Tuesday's final round.
Sacramento State scored 319 in the first round but was able to make a significant improvement in the second with a total of 623.
Helping the team's second round charge was Hall who finished one over par. She began her round with a bogey on the par-3 14th but drew back to even with a birdie on the par-3 17th. A bogey on No. 1 was immediately followed by a birdie on the par-3 second. Bogeys on Nos. 4 and 7 took her to 2-over before she birdied her final hole, the par-5 13th. In the opening round, Hall shot 80 with 12 pars, four bogeys and two double bogeys.
Senior Kercia Brakel was the most consistent member of the team with a pair of 77s. Brakel was seven strokes over through her first nine holes in the opening round before she birdied Nos. 4, 6, and 9 along with five pars to drop to 4-over. She ended her first round with a bogey on the par-5 11th. She was 5-over through her first eight holes but played her last 10 even with a birdie on No. 6.
Tiffany Nichols matched Brakel's second round score of 77 to go along with an opening round 82. Her first round featured a birdie on the par-3 8th, seven pars, nine pars and a double bogey. In the second round, she had two birdies, nine pars and seven bogeys.
Lisa Persson also carded a 77 in the second round. That score followed her 84 in the first round. Persson's opening round began with a birdie on No. 15 but quickly unravelled with a par, three bogeys, a double bogey and triple bogey on the next six holes. She added a birdie on the par-5 sixth but also had six more bogeys. In the afternoon, she had nine pars and five bogeys before sandwiching two bogeys around a pair of birdies on holes 10-13.
Sagee Palavivatana shot 80-83. On the day, Palavivatana had two birdies, 17 pars, 13 bogeys and four double boogies.
Simore Hoey of Long Beach State and Luciane Lee of UC Irvine share the individual lead with a 36-hole total of 141.
