Women's Golf

CHANDLER, Ariz. — A late surge by the Sacramento State women's golf team helped bring them back into contention during the first round of the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Monday at Ocotillo Golf Resort.

The Hornets shot 325 and are tied for seventh place after the first of three rounds. The team is 18 strokes behind Boise State which holds the team lead at 307. Northern Arizona is second at 314 and owns the lowest score among the nine Big Sky Conference schools in the field.

Sacramento State began the day with a sluggish start as the five golfers ranged between 3 and 10 over par at the midway point. The five combined for 10 double bogeys during that stretch to hinder their progress.

On the back nine, the team settled down and began to make its move. Sophomore Sagee Palavivatana finished tied for 11th after shooting 78 during the round. Palavivatana shot 39 on both sides of the course and finished her day with three birdies, six pars, seven bogeys and a double bogey. She ended her day by playing the final four holes at 1-under.

Natalie Bodnar led the team on the back nine, shooting 38. Bodnar had eight bars with a double bogey on the par-5 seventh hole. On the front, she shot 41 with a pair of birdies, a par, five bogeys and a double bogey.

Rockelle Sande is tied for 41st with a round of 82. Sande parred her first four holes before a double bogey on the par-4 fifth. A par on No. 6 was followed by a bogey and two double bogeys. She had four pars and a bogey over her first five holes on the back half of the course but ended with three bogeys and  a birdie on No. 17.

Lisa Persson shot 86 and is tied for 72nd. Persson's round consisted of a birdie on the par-4 15th, seven pars, seven bogeys, and three double bogeys. Tiffany Nichols completed the team lineup with a round of 88 to tie for 86th place.

Senior Kercia Brakel, who is competing as an individual in the tournament, shot 80 and is tied for 23rd. Brakel was 7-over at the turn but shot 37 on the back nine with a birdie on the par-4 14th, six pars and two bogeys.

Boise State's Hayley Young was the lone golfer to break par during the day. Young carded a round of 71 and has a four-stroke lead over a pair of golfers.
