WOMEN'S GOLF WRAPS UP PLAY AT THE WYOMING COWGIRL CLASSIC

CHANDLER, Ariz. — Tiffany Nichols shot 76 and Lisa Persson had a final round 77 to pace the Sacramento State women's golf team at the Wyoming Cowgirl Classic on Wednesday at Ocotillo Golf Resort.

The Hornets finished ninth in the 19-team field field with a three-round total of 948. Sacramento State's score placed them fourth among the eight Big Sky Conference teams competing in the event.

Senior Kercia Brakel, who was competing as an individual, had the highest finish among the six Hornet golfers, tying for 12th place. Brakel totaled 80-73-77-230 to tie her third best 54-hole score in her career.

Sophomore Sagee Palavivatana  shot 78-76-82-236 and tied for 32nd place for the highest finish among the five golfers competing for Sacramento State. Natalie Bodnar was one stroke back in 34th and Nichols totaled 238 to tie for 35th. Persson (86-81-77-244) tied for 66th and Rockelle Sande shot 82-84-81-247 to tie for 74th.

On Wednesday, Nichols began on the 10th hole and parred her first five holes. Bogeys on the par-4 15th and 17th were her only miscues during the first nine holes of her round. On the front nine, she had three bogeys and five pars before ending her day with a birdie on the par-4 ninth.

Persson got off to a fantastic start, playing her first nine holes at 1-under. The junior had birdies on both par-5s (Nos. 11 and 18) as well as a birdie on the par-3 16th to go along with four pars and two bogeys. On her final nine holes, Persson had one birdie on the par-5 sixth, three pars, three bogeys and a pair of double bogeys.

Bodnar matched her career best over 54 holes with rounds of 79-78-80-237. The freshman was 6-over par at the midway point of her round after two bogeys and two double bogeys. She had eight pars on the front side of the course as well as a double bogey on the par-3 fourth.

The final score of the day was contributed by Sande who shot 81. Her final round consisted of two birdies, seven pars, seven bogeys and two double bogeys.

Boise State retained its lead to win the team title. The Broncos shot 307-301-293-901 to finish 19 strokes of second place Xavier. The team also had the medalist with Hayley Yooung who shot 71-71-72-214.

Sacramento State will compete at the Fresno State Lexus Classic next week before returning to Ocotillo for the Big Sky Championships in two weeks.
