Palavivatana Finishes Fifth, Nichols Leads Team in Final Round
CITY OF INDUSTRY, Calif. — A third-round 74 from
Palavivatana recorded her first career top-five finish with a 54-hole career low of 76-74-75-225. The sophomore was followed by Nichols who tied for ninth with rounds of 79-75-74-228. tied for 24th, was 42nd and tied for 56th.
Palavivatana's bettered her 54-hole total by one stroke which was set last year at the Big Sky Championship. The North Highliands, Calif., native (Center HS) opened the third round on the 14th hole with consecutive bogeys but was even after eight holes of play with the help of an eagle on the par-4 first. Two bogeys surrounded a par before she birdied the par-3 seventh. Three pars and two bogeys closed her round.
Nichols also started slowly on Tuesday with bogeys on her first three holes (Nos. 15-17). She responded by playing the next eight holes at 1-under par with a birdie on the par-4 second and seven pars. Bogeys on Nos. 8 and 10 (both par-4) were followed by a birdie on the par-5 11th and three pars.
Hall provided the third-lowest round for the team on Tuesday with a 79. Hall's card featured birdies on the par-5 18th and par-4 first along with six pars and 10 bogeys.
Persson and Brakel each recorded rounds of 81. Persson finished the day with two birdies, eight pars, five bogeys, two double-bogeys and a triple-bogey. Brakel had a birdie, seven pars, nine pars and a double-bogey.
Gonzaga maintained its lead throughout the tournament to claim the team title. The Bulldogs totaled 902 to finish 11 strokes ahead of host Cal State Fullerton. UC Riverside (917), Portland State (922) and Boise State (927) completed the top five.
Sacramento State finished in sixth place with a three-round total of 315-307-309-931. The Hornets placed second among the three Big Sky Conference teams in the field, trailing PSU and finishing ahead of Montana (972).
Gonzaga's Raychelle Santos was the medalist with rounds of 74-74-70-218 to edge A Ram Choi of Portland State by one stroke. Santos' third round score was the only under-par round of the tournament.
The team will next compete at the Anteater Invitational in Santa Ana, Calif., from Feb. 25-26.
