Women's Golf Makes Season Debut at WSU Cougar Cup

PULLMAN, Wash. — The Sacramento State women's golf team made its season debut on Monday at the WSU Cougar Cup at Palouse Ridge Golf Club. Through two rounds, the Hornets are tied for 10th place after shooting 321-306-627.

Junior Lssa Persson, who transfered from Shorter University, posted the best rounds of the day for the Hornets and is tied for 36th place overall. Persson opened with an 81 but bounced back with a 1-over par 73 in the second round. In the afternoon, Person opened with four consecutive pars before birdying the par-4 14th and 15th. Two bogeys moved her back to even but she made the turn at 1-under following a birdie on the the par-5 18th. Playing holes 1-9, Persson ended her round with seven pars and two bogeys. Her opening round consisted of 10 pars, seven bogeys and a double bogey.

Sophomore Lexie Hall ranks second on the team and is tied for 50th after shooting 81-76-157. Hall was fairly steady in the first round with nine pars and nine bogeys. Her first birdie of the day came on her opening hole of the second round (the par-5 10th). A birdie on the par-4 12th dropped her to 2-under before bogeys on five of the next six holes left her with a 39 at the midway point. Hall ended with a birdie, six pars and two bogeys.

Junior Tiffany Nichols made her Hornet debut after transferring from San Jose State. Nichols shot 82-76-158 and is tied for 53rd. In the opening round, she had a birdie, eight pars, seven bogeys and a double bogey. Her afternoon round was spectacular with the exception of two holes. Nichols began on the 11th holes and was 2-under through No. 17 before a double on the par-4 18th and a quadruple bogey o the par-4 1st jumped her to 4-over. She played her final nine holes with a birdie on the par-3 4th, seven pars and a bogey.

Sophomore Sagee Palavivatana was the lone Hornet to have a better first round than second. Palavivatana led the team in the morning with a 77 which consisted of three birdies, eight pars, six bogeys and a double bogey. In the second round, she carded an 81 which left her with a 36-hole total of 158 which ties her for 53rd place.

Senior Kercia Brakel had two rounds of 82. In the first round, Brakel had nine pars, eight bogeys and a double bogey. She added 10 pars, six bogeys and two doubles.

California holds a four-stroke lead over Washington State for the team lead. Sacramento State ranks second among the five Big Sky Conference schools in the field, trailing only Portland State (306-300-606).

The tournament concludes on Tuesday with a single round.
