SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Hannah Friend was named the Big Sky Conference's Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the league announced Tuesday. It is the first career Big Sky award for Friend.
On Thursday night, Friend helped lead the Hornets to a dominant win over the visiting Montana State Bobcats, leading the team with 31 points and with nine rebounds. She played 38 minutes while also collecting four steals and two blocks.
The 31 points scored were just three shy of the most ever scored in a conference game. Friend finished just back of Brianna Burgos's 34 points against Montana State on Feb. 6, 2016.
Additionally, Friend and teammate Maranne Johnson (23 points) combined to match the program's record for points scored by a duo in a conference game, scoring 54 points. In the same game in which Burgos scored 34, she combined with Johnson (20 points), at the time setting the record at 54.
Friend continued her excellent play Saturday, coming up just one rebound short of a double-double for the second straight night as she scored 18 points and pulled in nine boards against Montana. She again played 38 minutes and added another block and three steals.
In total, Friend averaged 24.5 points while shooting 40% from the floor. She had nine rebounds in each game while playing 38 minutes in both of Sacramento State's wins over Montana State and Montana.
The award is the first for Friend and the first for Sacramento State this season. The last time a Hornets player took home the recognition was January 31st of last season (Johnson).
