SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- The Sacramento State Hornets will paint the Nest pink on Saturday as they #Play4Kay and raise awareness for the Kay Yow Foundation at the Nest. Find out more by visiting Sacramento State Women's Basketball News.

They Hornets will also look to win back-to-back games for the first time this season as they welcome Montana to Sacramento.

Tip of is scheduled for 2:05 pm PT on Saturday, Feb. 10.

The Starting Five

  1. Sophomore guard Hannah Friend scored 31 points Thursday against Montana State, coming up just three points shy of the Hornets program record for points in a conference game (34, Brianna Burgos, Feb. 6, 2016 vs. Montana State)
  2. Senior guard Maranne Johnson collected five steals in Sacramento State's last game, giving her 307 for her career and moving her to within one of the Hornets program career leader Fantasia Hillard (308).
  3. Sophomore point guard Tiara Scott scored a season-high 21 points against the Bobcats and, in the process, gave Sacramento State their first game with three 20+ scorers.
  4. Hannah Friend and Maranne Johnson combined to score 54 points Thursday against Montana State, matching the most points scored by a duo in a conference game in program history (last, 2/6/16 vs. Montana State).
  5. Montana (12-11, 8-4) enters Saturday's game coming off a tough loss on the road at Portland State. They are just 3-5 on the road. Overall, Montana is scoring 61.7 points per game while allowing 62.0.

Scouting Montana

Montana enters Saturday's afternoon matchup with Sacramento State with a 12-11 record, including an 8-4 mark in Big Sky Conference play. Although Montana dropped their last game, a road loss at Portland State, the Lady Griz are 3-2 over their last five and have won two of their last three road contests. Overall, Montana is 3-7 away from their home court (including neutral sites). As a team, the Lady Griz average just 61.7 points per game, second-to-last in the Big Sky Conference. However, their 62.0 points allowed per game is the second-best mark in the conference. They play clean defense, committing just 15.3 fouls per game, and are excellent off the boards, ranking third in rebounds (903), rebounds per game (39.3), and rebound margin (4.1). Mckenzie Johnston leads her team and the conference with 114 assists and 5.0 assists per game. She also leads the Lady Griz with 11.0 points per game. Montana is led by second year head coach Shannon Schweyen.

About Last Game

The Hornets played perhaps their best game of the season Thursday night, defeating the Montana State Bobcats, 88-77. As a team, Sacramento State shot 52.5%, their best this season. Hannah Friend led the team in scoring, putting up 34 points on 11-of-20 shooting, including 3-for-8 from three and 6-for-6 at the free throw line. She also had a team-high nine rebounds. Maranne Johnson also broke the 20-point mark, scoring 23, while Tiara Scott also put up 20+, going off for a season-high 21. It was the first time Sacramento State had three-20+ scorers for the first time this season.

Against Montana

  • The Hornets are 6-37 against Montana since the start of the 1996-97 season, including 0-1 this year. In Sacramento, the Hornets are just 5-15 against the Lady Griz.

Tiara's Goes Off

Tiara Scott scored a season-high 21 points Thursday night on 7-of-12 shooting, including 5-for-8 from distance. Both her eight attempts and five makes are new season-highs.

Taking Good Shots

Sacramento State made a season-high 52.5% of their shots last going, going 32-for-61 from the floor. They passed their previous high of 50.9% (28-55) against Idaho earlier this season. The Hornets also shot 41.9% (13-31) from beyond the arc, their second best mark this season.

Take Advantage of Freebies

Sacramento State went 11-for-14 (78.6%) from the free throw last night, led by a perfect 6-for-6 effort by Hannah Friend. For the season, the Hornets are shooting 70.9% from the line, the fifth best mark in the Big Sky Conference. Junior Raegen Rohn leads the squad, shooting 92.9% (13-14) from the free-throw line.

Ball Security

Sacramento State has done a good job this season holding on to the basketball, having committed just 319 turnovers on the season. That number is the 59th fewest in all of NCAA Div. I and fifth in the Big Sky Conference.

Snap The Streak

Sacramento State snapped their eight game losing streak with Thursday's win over Montana State. The streak was their longest since dropping eight straight games during the 2010-11 season. That eight-game losing streak was part of a much longer 19-game losing streak.

Bitten By The Injury Bug

Sacramento State has endured more than their share of injuries through the 2017-18 season.

Junior Raegen Rohn missed the team's first four games recovering from a wrist injury, putting the Hornets short during a trying east coast road trip.

Senior forward Kyhonta Doughty has been battling a knee injury all season. Expected to be a staple in the starting lineup, Doughty has just eight starts, has played in just 17 of 22 games, and is averaging only 15 minutes a game.

Senior point guard Justyce Dawson missed two games and was limited in two more with a concussion.

After leading all freshmen in steals and scoring, Dana DeGraffenreid went down with a hip injury on Jan. 4 and is out for the season.

After playing just two games, freshman forward Tiana Johnson has been out all season with a leg injury.

Big Sky Record Setter

Maranne Johnson set the new Big Sky Conference record for career made three-pointers earlier this season, passing Montana State's Katie Bussey (2008-12) on Saturday, Dec. 30, 2017. She currently has 279 career threes. She is also approaching the Big Sky Conference record for career steals.

Sacramento State Top-10 Watch: Points

Maranne Johnson is currently fourth all-time with 1,477 points for her career. She is now just 27 points back of Kylie Kuhns (2009-13) and her 1,504 career points.

Justyce Dawson is sixth for most career assists in Sacramento State women's basketball program history with 284. The senior point guard is 13 back of Kylie Kuhns (297, 2009-13).

Maranne Johnson continues to close in on the Sacramento State women's hoops program record for career steals. Johnson now has 307 for her career, just one off the program mark of 308 (Fantasia Hilliard, 2011-15).
