JOHNSON SCORES 20 IN WOMEN’S BASKETBALL LOSS TO #12 WEST VIRGINIA

Morgantown, W. Va.Maranne Johnson led the Sacramento State women's basketball team with 20 points Tuesday night as the Hornets fell 101-42 to #12 West Virginia in Morgantown.

For Johnson, the 20 points were her most in a game this season after putting up 13 in the season's first two contests. The 20 points were also her most since scoring 25 in a 110-104 win at Southern Utah last February.

In addition to leading in points, Johnson's 40 minutes and three assists were tops on the night while her six boards matched Hannah Friend for the team lead. Johnson's 40 minutes played led all players from either team.

Dana DeGraffenreid was the only other Hornet to score in double digits Tuesday night, adding 11 while pulling in five boards. The freshman guard has scored double-digit points in each of her first three games to start her Sacramento career, averaging 11.3 points to go along with 5.3 rebounds.

Despite strong games by Johnson and DeGraffenreid, a rough first quarter in which the Hornets shot just 7.7% and scored only four points put them at a deficit from which they were unable to come back.

Trailing by 19 after a quarter, Sacramento State found a bit of their offense in the second quarter, scoring 17 points on 7-for-23, but watched the Mountaineers score 23 points to extend their lead to 25. After three quarters, the deficit had grown to 43.

Sacramento State shot just 24.7% for the game, going 18-73 from the floor. They also struggled from behind the arc, shooting 19.4% (7-36). The Hornets had 38 rebounds but totaled just seven assists on the night.

The Mountaineers, on the other hand, shot 53.4% (39-73) from the floor, including 23.8% (5-21) from outside. As a team, West Virginia totaled 21 assists and pulled down 55 rebounds. The number 12 ranked team in the nation challenged the Hornets with their own style of play, competing at a quick pace throughout the game and forcing 22 Sacramento State turnovers.

Both Teana Muldrow (27 points, 12 rebounds) and Naomi Davenport (22 points, 10 rebounds) recorded double-doubles for West Virginia.

Tuesday's game at West Virginia marks the end of Sacramento State's season-opening road trip, but not the end of a seven-game stretch of games away from the Nest.

After returning to Sacramento for a few days, the Hornets will travel to the Grand Canyon State to take on Arizona State University on Saturday, Nov. 18. Tip off is scheduled for 1 pm PT.
