Sacramento State student-athletes in winter sports men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s indoor track & field, and women’s gymnastics have combined to earn 35 conference all-Academic honors.

HARKLEROAD NAMED FINALIST FOR DIVISION I ROOKIE COACH OF THE YEAR
Sacramento State women’s basketball head coach Bunky Harkleroad is one of five finalists selected for the 2014 Spalding Maggie Dixon Division I Rookie Coach of the Year award, which honors a Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) Division I head coach who has led his or her team to a successful season during his or her first year at the helm.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS TO SOUTHERN UTAH 86-78 IN BIG SKY QUARTERFINAL
Sacramento State shot a season-best 46.7% from the field and outscored Southern Utah in points in the paint, but the Thunderbirds shot 49.1% and made 20-of-23 free throws in an 86-78 win in the Quarterfinal round of the Big Sky Tournament.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HEADS TO GRAND FORKS FOR BIG SKY TOURNAMENT
Qualifying for the Big Sky Tournament for the third consecutive season, Sacramento State (18-11, 10-10 Big Sky) prepares to face second-seeded Southern Utah (21-8, 15-5 Big Sky) in the quarterfinal round of the conference championship. The Hornets and Thunderbirds will play the first of three quarterfinal games on Thursday, opening tournament play at 12:30 p.m. Pacific time.

HILLIARD NAMED ALL-BIG SKY WOMEN’S BASKETBALL HONORABLE MENTION
Sacramento State junior point guard Fantasia Hilliard has been named honorable mention on the 2014 All-Big Sky Women’s Basketball teams, the conference announced Monday. The All-Big Sky honorees were selected through a vote by the league’s 11 head coaches.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL FALLS AT MONTANA STATE, ENTERS BSC TOURNEY AS #7 SEED
Sacramento State opened the game shooting 1-of-18 and could never recover, trailing by at least nine points over the final 33 minutes of the game and shooting a season-worst 25.6% from the field in an 81-63 loss at Montana State.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL BREAKS NCAA 3-POINT RECORD BUT FALLS AT MONTANA
With 15 3-pointers made in the game Sacramento State surpassed the NCAA Div. I single season record for made 3-pointers, but Montana totaled nine three’s itself and shot 55.9% overall in an 87-76 win Thursday night in Missoula.

With a trip to the Big Sky Tournament solidified, Sacramento State (18-9, 10-8 Big Sky) looks to improve its seeding for the conference tournament as it closes the regular season at Montana (18-9, 12-6 Big Sky) at 6 p.m. Pacific time Thursday and Montana State (13-14, 8-10 Big Sky) at 1 p.m. Pacific Saturday.

COLD SHOOTING DOOMS WOMEN’S HOOPS IN 62-55 LOSS AT NORTHERN COLORADO
In a one-point game with four minutes to play, Sacramento State missed its last eight shots, including five layups, as well as a free throw and Northern Colorado scored the last six points of the game to claim a 62-55 win on Thursday night in Greeley.

Down by as many as 22 points in the contest, Sacramento State came all the way back to level the score in the final minute of play but was unable to overtake Eastern Washington as the Eagles finished a 79-73 win.

Southern Utah shot 66.7% and had two players total 22 points apiece in a 93-74 win over Sacramento State on Saturday at Centrum Arena. The Hornets led by eight points through the first 13 minutes of the contest but it was all Southern Utah after that point.

After Sacramento State led by as many as 22 points in a dominant first half, Northern Arizona was able to get within a four-point deficit in the final minutes but the Hornets finished strong to claim a 99-91 victory on Thursday night in Flagstaff.

Freshman Gigi Hascheff scored a career-high 27 points and was one of five Hornets to score in double figures as, for the second time this season, Sacramento State broke the Big Sky single game scoring record in a 111-104 win at Weber State.

Sacramento State held a 34-28 halftime lead but shot 3-of-30 from the field through all but the final five seconds of the second half as Idaho State rode a strong defensive performance to a 62-53 win on Thursday in Pocatello.

Sacramento State got to open Big Sky play with six of its first eight conference games at home but now faces eight road games and just four home contests through the end of the regular season. The Hornets (13-4, 5-3 Big Sky) open a season-long four game road trip this week, facing Idaho State (6-11, 4-4 Big Sky) at 6 p.m. Pacific Time on Thursday and Weber State (4-13, 0-8 Big Sky) at 1 p.m. Pacific Saturday.

With four assists Sacramento State junior point guard Fantasia Hilliard broke the program record for career assists, and freshman Gigi Hascheff scored a career-high 26 points to lead the Hornets to a 74-64 victory over Northern Colorado on Saturday.

After a record-breaking 110-104 victory over Big Sky-leading North Dakota on Thursday the Sacramento State women’s basketball team (12-4, 4-3 Big Sky) hosts Northern Colorado (10-7, 4-4 Big Sky) at 2 p.m. Saturday in The Nest. Both the Hornets and Bears won on Thursday, with Sacramento State ending a three-game losing streak and Northern Colorado winning for the fourth time in the last five games and improving to 3-1 in road Big Sky games with an overtime win at Northern Arizona.

Sacramento State junior point guard Fantasia Hilliard has been named to the watch list for the Nancy Lieberman Award, given annually to the top point guard in NCAA Div. I, the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame announced today.

DIVERSE GROUP OF COACHES LEADING WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TO RECORD START
Starting just a month prior to the commencement of the Sacramento State women’s basketball season, head coach Bunky Harkleroad and his staff worked tirelessly to rebuild and adjust to an unfamiliar staff, program, and team. Despite the limited time given, the new additions to the staff have proven to be a perfect fit at Sacramento State as the team ended the non-conference portion of the schedule on Saturday with an 8-1 record.

Sacramento State junior guard Takara "TK" Burse scored 17 of her career-high 22 points in the second half and, for the sixth time this season, the Hornets turned a single-possession game in the final two minutes into a win as they outlasted UC Davis 84-78.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL RETURNS WITH CAUSEWAY CLASH AT UC DAVIS SATURDAY
After a two week break the Sacramento State women’s basketball team (7-1) will close the non-conference portion of its schedule with its annual Causeway game at 2 p.m. Saturday at UC Davis (4-7). The contest will be worth 10 points in the season-long ScholarShare Causeway Cup, which UC Davis currently leads 37.5-12.5.

MORENO TOPS 1,000 POINTS, LEADS WOMEN’S BASKETBALL PAST UC IRVINE 99-94
Senior Alle Moreno became the 11th player in program history to score 1,000 career points and hit a 3-pointer and made two free throws in the final 29 seconds of the game to break a late tie and give Sacramento State a 99-94 win over UC Irvine.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL CLOSES NON-CONFERENCE HOME SLATE VS UC IRVINE
The 6-1 Sacramento State women’s basketball team hosts its final non-conference home game and its last contest of the semester in a matchup with UC Irvine (5-4) at 2 p.m. Saturday in The Nest. The game opens a day-night doubleheader with the Sacramento State men’s basketball team, which will host William Jessup at 7 p.m.

Sacramento State senior guard Alle Moreno has been selected as the Big Sky Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced Monday. Moreno was also chosen as the National Mid-Major Player of the Week as selected by College Sports Madness.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL TOPS SAN JOSÉ STATE IN SHOOTOUT, 103-99
Sacramento State senior guard Alle Moreno scored a career-high 28 points, and in a game with 10 ties and 14 lead changes in which neither team had a double-digit lead the Hornets were able to execute down the stretch to claim a 103-99 victory over San José State and former head coach Jamie Craighead.

WOMEN’S HOOPS HOSTS FORMER COACH CRAIGHEAD, SAN JOSÉ STATE SATURDAY
Off to the best start to a season in the Div. I era of the program, the 5-1 Sacramento State women’s basketball team returns to The Nest to face San José State (4-4) at 2 p.m. Saturday. The game will be the first for the Hornets against former coach Jamie Craighead, who less than three months ago left Sacramento State after four seasons to become the head coach of the Spartans.

In a game with 12 ties and 15 lead changes Sacramento State erased a late two-point deficit with an 8-1 run in the final two minutes to claim an 87-84 win over Utah Valley on Wednesday afternoon in Orem, Utah. The Hornets improved to 4-1 as the Wolverines dropped to 1-5.

DERRICK FLORENCE NAMED WOMEN’S BASKETBALL ASSISTANT COACH
Sacramento State head coach Bunky Harkleroad has announced the addition of Derrick Florence to his coaching staff. Florence was the head girls’ varsity basketball coach at Centennial High School in Compton for six seasons before serving as an assistant coach at Cal State L.A. last year.

Following a career-best weekend in which she totaled 30 points and 12 rebounds, Sacramento State junior forward Shanti Smith has been named the Big Sky Women’s Basketball Player of the Week. The Hornets have earned the honor in each of the first two weeks of the 2013-14 season as senior Alle Moreno garnered the award last week.

WOMEN’S BASKETBALL OPENS SEASON SUNDAY WITH UC SANTA CRUZ EXHIBITION
