DAVIS, Calif. — The start of the of 2019 outdoor track and field season resulted in a school top mark and 25 top three finishes on Friday and Saturday at the Aggie Open hosted by UC Davis.

Both the Hornet men's and women's team placed second in the team standings. In the men's competition, UC Davis totaled 236 while Sacramento State wrapped up the meet with 159. San Jose State was third with 49. The Hornet women scored 186 points to finish behind UC Davis (238). Pacific placed third with 40.

Sacramento State will next compete at home at the Hornet Invitational on Friday and Saturday, March 15-16, at Hornet Stadium. The competition will begin with the first day of the heptathlon and decathlon as well as the men's and women's hammer and 200. The second day begins at 9 a.m. on Saturday.


Kyle Peterson started the meet on Friday with a career best of 196-02 in the men's hammer. That throw moved him into fifth place in school history and was more than 10 feet beyond his PR of 186-00 which was set two years ago. Peterson finished second in the meet overall and was the top collegiate athlete. He went on to finish first in the discus with a throw of 152-00.

Daraon Bland was second in the long jump. The sophomore was one of only two athletes to surpass 22-feet in the meet. His long came on his third attempt.

Quan Phun cleared 14-01.25 to place second in the pole vault. Phun was just 2.25 inches shy of his PR.


Jade Cany won the high jump in her outdoor debut. Cany cleared 5-05.00 to win by two inches over teammate Shelby Dozier who was second.

Jelaia Jones and Morgan Jones claimed the top two spots in the shot put. The pair were the only two to have a put beyond 44 feet and each acclaimed their best on their final attempt. Jelaia Jones recorded a mark of 46-05.50 while Morgan Jones finished with a long of 44-00.50.

Nashedah Mu'Min and Brittany Patterson were 1-2 in the triple jump. Mu'Min jumped 39-03.25 on her second jump of the meet and finished 3.5 inches beyond Patterson. All three of Patterson's legal jumps were at least 38-05.00. Her long came on her fourth attempt.

Rhaven Dean was second in both the hammer and javelin. Dean improved her distance on her first three hammer throws and Friday before passing on her final three attempts. She returned later in the day to throw 114-08 in the javelin on her first attempt.

Tessa Davis added a third-place finish in the pole vault after clearing 11-09.75. Davis was just a fraction of an inch off her PR of 11-10.00 which came last season.


Jabari Reynolds recorded a win for the Hornets in the 400. Reynolds ran 49.58 and was trailed by Frederick Wagner V (49.84) and Calvin Spellman (50.06) as Sacramento State swept the top three in the event.

Jermain Worthy placed second in the 110-hurdles in his first career collegiate outdoor meet. Worthy ran 15.65.

The men's 4x100 relay team of Ryan Tennant, Adrienne Jackson, Tegbir Jhutty and Daron Bland ran 43.84 to place second.

Shane Marshall completed the top three finishers for the men by running 6:39.37 in the 2K steeplechase to finish third.


Emilia Del Hoyo won the 100-hurdles and Cassidy Zurn finished third. Del Hoyo set a personal best by running 14.30 which easily topped her previous low of 14.41 from 2016. Zurn ran the 110H for the first time and had a time of 15.04.

Artearra Coffey and Khala Clarke were second and third in the 400-hurdles. Coffey crossed the line in 1:07.18 and Clarke had a time of 1:10.44.

Sacramento State had three of the top four finishers in the 3K. Cagnei Duncan led the trio by running 10:18.18 to place second. That time was less than a second off her career best. Amelia Pear was third in 10:48.60.
