MEN PLACE SECOND, WOMEN THIRD AT RAFER JOHNSON/JACKIE JOYNER-KERSEE INVITATIONAL

WESTWOOD, Calif. — Three school top 10 marks and 20 top five finishes highlighted the day for the Sacramento State track & field teams at the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational on Saturday.

The Hornet men finished second in the meet with 124 points. That total left the team behind No. 4 Texas A&M which totaled 217 points. Cal Poly finished third with 117 while host UCLA was fourth at 111.

In the women's team standings No. 6 Texas A&M completed the sweep with 247.5 points. UCLA was second in 133 to finish five points ahead of the Hornets (128). Cal Poly was fourth with 89.5 points.

Sacramento State will return to Southern California and compete in three meets next weekend. The action begins with the Bryan Clay Invitational at Azusa Pacific and the Mt. SAC Invitational. The team will also have student-athletes at the Beach Invitational hosted by Long Beach State.

WOMEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

• Freshman Shilah Bedingfield posted a pair of school top 10 marks. Bedingfield ran 23.97 in the 200 which moved her into fifth place in the school record book. The time is also the second fastest in the Big Sky this season trailing only the 23.73 from Northern Arizona's Jasmine Malone. Bedingfield improved her time in the 400 to 55.04 but remained sixth in school history. She also remained fourth in the Big Sky this season.

Amy Quinones placed her name among the top 10 in school history in the 1500. Quinones finished in fourth place in the meet with a career best of 4:30.92. That time moved her into 10th place at Sacramento State and is sixth in the Big Sky in 2018. Denise Reis was close behind Quinones in the event, finishing in fifth place with a time of 4:32.14.

• Sacramento State had two top-six finishers in the 400-hurdles led by Carly Schulz who ran 59.85 to place second. That time was just off her season best of 59.68 which ranks second in the league. Angelica Cusworth was sixth in the event after running 1:04.07.

Gracie Albano finished third in the 3K in 10:24.00.

• The Hornet relay teams each finished among the top five. The 4x400 relay team was second in 3:48.90 and the 4x100 team ran 46.21 to finish fifth.

MEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

Andre Lindsey had the second fastest time in the 110-hurdles among the Div. I athletes. Lindsey crossed the line 14.60 to place fourth overall behind a pair of unattached athletes and Texas A&M's Tyler Guillory.

• Freshman Clinton Spellman was fourth in the 200 in a career best 21.67. Spellman's previous best was 21.79 set at the Sacramento State Invitational.

• The 4x400 relay team of Jabari Reynolds, Clinton Spellman, Frederick Wagner V and Alec Foster  finished third in 3:15.34 for the other top five finish for the men.

WOMEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS

• Hornet throwers combined for six top five finishes in their four events. Kathleen Durand finished fourth and Morgan Jones was fifth in the hammer. Durand had a best of 167-02 and Jones threw 160-10. Durand was also fifth in the discus with a long of 139-11. That distance placed her directly behind teammate Adora Garrick who finished fourth at 142-03.

Julia Grimm also added a fourth place finish in the javelin following a throw of 140-00.

Nashedah Mu'Min had the highest finish on the team in the jumps. Mu'Min was fifth in the triple jump  and set her season best at 39-05.25.

MEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS

• Sacramento State continued its dominance in the triple jump. Darius Armstead placed second, Mohamed Abdullah was fourth and Adrienne Jackson was seventh. Armstead used a season best of 50-11.50 and remained second in the Big Sky this year behind teammate Jah Strange. Abdullah also set his season best at 49-06.25 and stayed in third place in the league rankings. Jackson posted a PR with a best of 47-07.25.

Kyle Peterson placed third in the hammer for the best performance by Sacramento State in the throws. Peterson had a toss of 171-05. He also had bests of 156-04 in the hammer and 45-00.25 in the shot put.

• Freshman Jevin Kitchen was fourth in the high jump and matched his career best of 6-06.75.
