MEN'S AND WOMEN'S TRACK AND FIELD BOTH FINISH FIRST AT UCR SPRING CLASSIC

RIVERSIDE, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's and women's track and field teams each finished first at the UC Riverside Spring Classic Invitational on Saturday. The Hornet men compiled 134 points to place the team 27 points ahead of second place Utah Valley. The women's team totaled 156  points which was twice the mark of second place UC Irvine (87.5).

Overall, the team posted six school top 10 marks, finished first in nine events and had 16 marks which placed members of the team in the top three of the Big Sky Conference this season.

Sacramento State returns home next week for the Mondo Team Challenge on Saturday at Hornet Stadium. Along with the Hornets, the meet will feature Southern Illinois, UC Riverside, UC Irvine, Long Beach State, North Dakota and UNLV.

WOMEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

Freshman Shilah Bedingfield produced a pair of school top 10 marks. Bedingfield ran 55.14 to move into sixth place in school history and record the fastest 400 in the Big Sky this season. She also had a time of 24.27 in the 200 which was the ninth fastest in Hornet history and also the best in the league this year.

The team had great success in relays as the Hornets finished first in the 4x200, 1600 medley and 4x400 relays as well as second in the 4x100. The Hornets ran 3:42.56 in the 4x400 which was the sixth best all-time at Sacramento State and the fastest in the Big Sky in 2018. The 4x100 time of 46.41 ranks second in the league this year.

In the 400-hurdles, Cassidy Zurn and Carly Schulz finished first and second and also posted the top two times in the league in 2018. Zurn ran 1:00.37 and Schulz was closed behind in 1:00.69.

Other notables included Amy Quinones who finished first in the 5K in 17:41.60 and Denise Reis who placed second in the 800 in 2:10.73.

MEN'S TRACK HIGHLIGHTS

Alec Foster finished first in the 400. The sophomore ran 48.32 as he broke 48.4 for the second straight meet. Foster was also fifth in the 200 in 22.13.

The mens 4x400 relay team produced a Big Sky leading time of 3:16.42. The 4x100 relay team won the meet in 41.55 and Sacramento State also finished second in the 4x200 and the 1600 medley relays.

Andre Lindsey made his outdoor debut and ran 14.32 to finish second in the meet. Lindsey's time is the fastest in the Big Sky this year. He was also fifth at the meet in the 100 (11.01).

WOMEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS

Julia Grimm won the javelin with a best of 141-06. The throw was just short of her mark of 146-01 set last weekend a the Sacramento State Invitational. Freshman Rhaven Dean moved into a tie for 10th place in school history and is now third in the Big Sky after throwing 136-03.

Jelaia Jones and Morgan Jones moved to the top of the Big Sky leaderboard in the shot put. Jelaia had a put of 47-04.25 which is the sixth longest in the program record book. Morgan finished with a best of 45-02.50.

Kathleen Durand was second in the hammer. Durand threw 177-00 which was only eight inches off of her career long set earlier this season.

Danielle Brandon was second in the pole vault after the senior cleared 12-06.00.

MEN'S FIELD HIGHLIGHTS

Sacramento State continued to put on a show in the triple jump. Jah Strange jumped a career best 51-03.50 to win the meet, move into third in Sacramento State history, top the Big Sky leaderboard and rank fourth in Div. I. Darius Armstead was second in the meet at 50-10.75 for a season best. Armstead is now second in the league and sixth nationally in Div. I.

Kyle Peterson was second in the discus and fourth in the shot put with season bests in both event. Peterson threw the discus 169-09 which is the second best in the league in 2018. He had a shot put of 54-00.00 which places him third in the Big Sky this year.

Jevin Kitchen cleared 6-06.75 in the high jump for a career best. Kitchen's mark ties him with Southern Utah's Frank Harris and North Dakota's Nolan Hovland for first place in the Big Sky.
