TRACK & FIELD MAKES IMMEDIATE IMPRESSION IN OPENING INDOOR MEET

NAMPA, Idaho — Despite being one of the last teams in the country to start its indoor season, Sacramento State made up for the delay with strong performances at the Bronco Invitational on Saturday. The Hornets posted eight school top 10 marks and had 24 top three finishes in their first competition of the year.

Women's Track Notes

Kristen Robinson led a sweep of the top four spots in the 60-hurdles. Robinson ran 8.78 in the prelims and then took a tenth off her time by running 8.68 in the finals. Emila Del Hoyo (8.77), Olivia Leavitt (8.89) and Artearra Coffey (8.91) completed the sweep.

Carly Schulz had a pair of second place finishes. The sophomore ran 56.99 in the 400 for the 10th fastest time in school history. Her previous indoor best in the event was 59.34 at last year's Bronco Invitational. Schulz was also second in the 200 with a PR of 25.38.

Amari Jones was second in the 60 after running 7.85 and was third in the 200 in 25.43 to set her career indoor best.

• The women's 4x400 relay team of Schulz, Jones, Cassidy Zurn and Joy Weems finished first with a time of 3:53.76. The Hornet foursome was 1.36 seconds faster than the second-place team.

Women's Field Notes

Tyhana Cooper posted a pair of career bests and moved up the top 10 list in both the weight throw and shot put. Cooper had a weight throw of 56-09.50 to win the event and move her into fifth place in the school record book. The mark was nearly three feet beyond her previous best of 53-11.25. The senior was fourth in the shot put after a put of 47-01.50. That distance tied her for fifth place all-time by a Hornet and was also a significant jump over her previous best of 43-03.25.

Jelaia Jones also moved into the Sacramento State top 10 in both throwing events. Jones was fourth in the weight throw at 54-01.00 to rank ninth in the Hornet record book. She was sixth in the shot put at 44-08.75 to jump into 10th place.

Emilia Del Hoyo finished second in the long jump with a career best of 19-01.50. That distance ties her for the seventh best all-time by a Hornet female. It also marked the second straight meet that Del Hoyo has set a PR in the long jump dating back to last year.

Candice Dominguez won the long jump after clearing 5-09.25. She was followed by teammate Elizabeth Venzon who jumped 5-07.25.

Men's Track Notes

• Freshman Alec Foster made an immediate impact in his two events. The Livermore, Calif., native finished third in the 400 and tied for fourth in the 200 in his collegiate debut. Foster's 400 time of 48.33 was the sixth fastest all-time at Sacramento State.

Eric Adorno had the highest individual finish by a Hornet on the track. Adorno was second in the 60-meter dash after running 6.95 in the finals for the best time by a Div. I athlete.

Men's Field Notes

Michael Turner led a sweep of the top three spots in the long jump. Turner jumped 23-08.00 to separate himself from the field. Freshman Jah Strange was second at 23-01.75 and Cory Barger placed third at 22-11.25.

• Strange also finished second in the triple jump after a leap of 48-11.00. That distance was the best by a collegiate competitor in the meet and moved him into fourth place in Hornet history.

Kyle Peterson placed second in the weight throw and was fourth in the shot put. Peterson had a shot put of 48-02.75 and weight throw of 54-01.25.

Sacramento State will return to competition next weekend at the Snake River Open in Pocatello, Idaho. The two-day meet will start on Friday, Feb. 27. The Hornets will return to Idaho State for the Big Sky Championships late in February.
