LOVETT/CANNON AND MEADOWS/GATHRIGHT RECEIVE ALL-LEAGUE RECOGNITION

Big West All-Conference Team

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State had two beach volleyball doubles teams named honorable mention all-Big West Conference, it was announced by the league office. The selections were part of the first-ever Big West all-beach volleyball team as the conference added the sport prior to the season.

The Hornets' doubles teams of senior Sloan Lovett/junior Madeline Cannon, and sophomore Hannah Meadows/freshman Brie Gathright were each named honorable mention all-league.

The all-conference squad featured six doubles squads on the first team, five on the second team, and three received honorable mention accolades. The Big West is comprised of six teams in beach volleyball, including fulltime members Cal Poly, CSUN, Long Beach State and Hawai'i. CSU Bakersfield and Sacramento State are associate members.

Lovett and Cannon played all 22 matches at the No. 1 spot in the Hornets' lineup, and finished the season with seven victories. The pair got better as the season progressed, winning four of their last seven matches. That included earning victories at No. 1 in both of their Big West Championship matches last week. During the postseason event, they beat doubles teams from CSUN (21-15, 22-24, 15-13) and Cal Poly (23-21, 21-16).

Lovett/Cannon also had a pair of victories against nationally ranked Cal, as well as wins over Boise State and San Jose State. Of Lovett/Cannon's seven wins during the year, four came in straight sets. Both players were also named all-league during the indoor season as Cannon and Lovett were each selected second team all-Big Sky Conference.

The Hornets' tandem of Gathright and Meadows have been partners since early April, and combined to post three wins. That included victories against Saint Mary's, Cal Poly and Feather River College. They played at Nos. 4 and 5 in the Hornets' lineup, including the final nine matches of the year at No. 4.

They posted a 22-20, 21-19 home win at No. 4 against Cal Poly, and a 21-17, 21-15 road win at Saint Mary's at No. 5. Individually, Meadows played with three different partners during the first month of the season before eventually teaming with Gathright the rest of the way. Gathright played with two different partners during the first month, before competing with Meadows.

Sacramento State completed its season last week when the team suffered a pair of losses to CSUN and Cal Poly at the inaugural Big West Championship in Huntington Beach.
