BEACH VOLLEYBALL OPENS TOURNAMENT WITH LOSS TO #15 NEW MEXICO

FOLSOM, Calif. -- Sacramento State forced a third set in three of the five doubles matches, but the Hornets were downed by 15th-ranked New Mexico, 5-0, in a beach volleyball matchup on Friday evening at Livermore Community Park.

The match was part of a three-day, five-team tournament the Hornets are hosting today through Sunday. The tournament, which also includes Washington, CSU Bakersfield and San Jose State, features five more matches on Saturday and one on Sunday. For a complete tournament schedule, please click here.

With the loss, Sacramento State dropped to 1-13 overall this season. Of the team's 13 losses, seven have come against opponents ranked among the top 20 teams in the nation. That includes New Mexico, which is ranked 15th in the DiG Collegiate Beach Volleyball poll. The Lobos won their third straight while improving to 14-4 this season.

The Hornets' tandems of Sloan Lovett/Madeline Cannon (No. 1), Brie Gathright/Hannah Meadows (No. 4) and Brigitte Murdock/Kennedy Kurtz (No. 5) each forced a third set against the nationally ranked Lobos.

Lovett and Cannon lost their match, 21-19, 15-21, 15-7, Gathright and Meadows fell, 21-16, 20-22, 15-10, and Murdock and Kurtz lost, 21-15, 16-21, 15-11. Kurtz and Murdock were playing as partners for the first time this season.

Lexie Skalbeck and Lana Brown also fell in a close match at No. 3 by a 21-19, 21-18 score. Lauren Aikels and Morgan Stanley fell at No. 2, 21-15, 2-15.

The Hornets will play three more times during tournament play, including twice tomorrow against CSU Bakersfield at 9 a.m. and San Jose State at 3 p.m. On Sunday, Sacramento State will take on Washington at 10 a.m.
