BEACH VOLLEYBALL GOES 1-2 AT THREE-MATCH TOURNAMENT IN MONTEREY

MONTEREY, Calif. — Sacramento State played three matches over a span of nine hours, posting a 1-2 record at the Monterey Beach Volleyball College Invitational on Saturday at Monterey Bay Park.

The Hornets opened the day this morning with a 5-0 victory over Feather River College before falling to both San Jose State and 16th-ranked Cal by 4-1 scores.

With the 1-2 record at today's event, Sacramento State is now 1-11 this season. San Jose State, which defeated Cal this morning, improved to 6-8. The Golden Bears, currently ranked 16th in the nation, saw its record move to 9-7.

Of the Hornets' 11 losses this season, six have come against ranked opposition. Sacramento State has now played Cal three times, San Jose State on three occasions, San Francisco twice, and Stanford, Saint Mary's and Pacific on one occasion.

Four different Sacramento State doubles teams played all three matches today, including Madeline Cannon and Sloan Lovett at No. 1, Lauren Aikels and Morgan Stanley at No. 2, Lana Brown and Lexie Skalbeck at No. 3, and Kennedy Kurtz and Skyler Takeda at both 4 and 5. Kurtz and Takeda were partners for the first time this season.

The duos of Cannon/Lovett and Aikels/Stanley both went 2-1 today, including Cannon and Lovett defeating Cal's Karina Langli and Mia Merino.

Brie Gathright and Hannah Meadows went 1-1 (1-0 at No. 4, 0-1 at No. 5), and Brigitte Murdock and Julia Wright lost their lone match at No. 5 against Cal. Both those combinations were playing as partners for the first time.
