INAUGURAL BIG WEST TOURNAMENT TO BE PLAYED IN LONG BEACH

IRVINE, Calif. - The Big West Conference announced today that Long Beach State has been selected to host the inaugural 2016 Big West Women's Beach Volleyball Tournament at the Beach Boulevard volleyball courts in Huntington Beach.

All six teams will participate in the two-day event scheduled for Friday, April 29 and Saturday, April 30 which features a double-elimination format. Seeding of the event will be determined by the conference office based on criteria that includes head-to-head results, common opponents, AVCA national poll and overall records.

"We're thrilled to have the opportunity to host the tournament," said Long Beach State head coach Mike Campbell. "I think it's great for the sport and for the conference to be playing such an important event in Huntington Beach, where beach volleyball is so popular. The fan base there is great, and will create a fun atmosphere for the inaugural championship."

Over the summer, the Big West announced the addition of beach volleyball as the conference's 17th-sponsored sport. Four Big West institutions currently field beach volleyball teams: Cal Poly, CSUN, Long Beach State and Hawai'i.  In addition, CSU Bakersfield and Sacramento State have accepted an invitation to join the Conference as associate members in beach volleyball, giving the league the minimum six teams required for postseason NCAA automatic qualification.
