WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State rowing squad won three of its four races against UC Davis Saturday morning at the Port of West Sacramento, winning by open water in the varsity eight, varsity four and novice eight competitions.
The victory in the varsity eight allowed Sacramento State to claim its 17th Jean Runyon Cup, a prize both schools have battled for annually since 1997. The Hornets now own a 17-4 record against UC Davis over that span. The Aggies' rowing squad had been a varsity sport until 2010, and is currently its ninth year of club status. The Hornets and Aggies were racing in 5-6 mile per hour crosshead winds against outgoing tide for most of the morning.
In the varsity eight race, Sacramento State's 2,000-meter winning time of 6:54.0 was 43 seconds faster than UC Davis' time of 7:37.0. The Hornets' second varsity eight also competed in the race, and their time of 7:03.5 was also much faster than the Aggies' finish.
Sacramento State's varsity four also raced to an open-water winning time of 7:55.2, while UC Davis was well behind at 8:52.7. The Hornets' second varsity four also competed in the race, and finished with a time of 7:58.5.
On the heels of its gold medal at last weekend's WIRA Championship, the Hornets' novice eight posted a winning time of 7:34.3, easily ahead of the Aggies' time of 7:50.9. In the novice four, UC Davis finished with an 8:20.4, followed by the Hornets' time of 8:52.3
Today marked the final regular season races for Sacramento State as the team will compete in the American Athletic Conference Championship on Sunday, May 19, in Oklahoma City.
