ROWING WRAPS UP 1ST DAY OF WIRAs, THREE BOATS TO COMPETE IN TOMORROW’S GRAND FINALS

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and novice four competed on the first day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Saturday at Lake Natoma.

Of those four Hornet boats, three will compete in a grand final tomorrow while the novice four finished first in its petite final this evening.

Sacramento State's varsity eight finished fourth in this morning's heat with a time of 6:46.29, and will be slotted into its grand final tomorrow morning at 8:50 a.m. against Stanford Lightweights, San Diego State, Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's, Santa Clara and Seattle. The Hornets will row out of Lane 4.

Sacramento State's second varsity eight posted a second place time of 7:05.68 in its morning heat. The Hornets qualified for the grand final tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. where the team will race in the second lane against Stanford Lightweights, San Diego State, Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's and Santa Clara.

Sacramento State's varsity four, which won gold at last year's WIRAs, finished third in its heat today with a time of 8:12.10. The boat will race in Lane 3 in tomorrow's grand final at 10:20 a.m. against San Diego State, Loyola Marymount, Stanford Lightweights, Santa Clara and Saint Mary's.

The novice four won its petite final with a time of 8:32.83, finishing ahead of Humboldt State, Arizona State, Sonoma State, Long Beach State and Southern Oregon, respectively. The Hornets finished third in their heat this morning with a time of 8:46.84.

Times for the Hornets' races tomorrow morning are as follows - varsity eight (8:50 a.m.), second varsity eight (9:30 a.m.) and varsity four (10:20 a.m.).
