SACRAMENTO -- Sacramento State's second varsity eight was named the American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week today after its open-water victory at last weekend's season-opening Sacramento State Invitational on Lake Natoma.
Racing with a crew that included four underclassmen (two freshmen, two sophomores), Sacramento State's second varsity eight posted a winning time of 6:54.0 under fair conditions over 2,000 meters. The Hornets, who led from start to finish, completed the course over 10 seconds faster than second place Saint Mary's (7:04.9) in the six-boat field.
As a team, Sacramento State had four first-place finishes at the regatta, and it was the second varsity eight that won by the widest margin. The second varsity eight race was not only the first of the day, it was the first race of the spring season for Sacramento State.
Today marks the first time the Hornets' second varsity eight has received American Athletic Conference Boat of the Week accolades since the program joined the league in 2015. The Hornets' varsity eight has received the honor three times - 2017, 2016 and 2015.
The team returns to the water for this Saturday's Hornet Invitational on Lake Natoma. The field includes Sacramento State, Gonzaga, San Diego State, Kansas State and Saint Mary's.
