GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- The Hornet women's varsity eight, second varsity eight, third varsity eight and varsity four all took home gold medals at the season-opening Sacramento State Invitational on Saturday morning at Lake Natoma.
The Sacramento State Invitational was comprised of crews from Sacramento State, Saint Mary's, Portland, Humboldt State, UC San Diego, Orange Coast College and Mills College. The regatta consisted of six races, and each of those races had between four and seven entries.
Each of Sacramento State's four first-place finishes came by over three seconds, including the second varsity eight winning by more than 10 seconds.
Racing throughout the morning in good conditions, Sacramento State's varsity eight posted to a winning time of 6:45.4, which was over six seconds faster than the next closest competitor. UC San Diego finished with a 6:51.9 and Portland went 6:52.7 to round out the top three in the six-boat field.
The Hornets won by open water in the second varsity eight, finishing with a time of 6:54.0, which was over 10 seconds faster than Saint Mary's second-place time of 7:04.9. UC San Diego's A boat finished third with a 7:06.2, and Portland fourth at 7:14.7 in the six-boat field.
Sacramento State's third varsity eight placed first with a 7:14.8, followed by Humboldt State A (7:21.5) and UC San Diego (7:31.5) to round out the top three in the seven-boat field. In the varsity four competition, Sacramento State posted a 7:47.9, which was faster than five other crews, including second-place Humboldt State (7:51.1).
Sacramento State also raced a novice four which placed second (8:07.2) out of seven boats in its competition.

The Hornets return to the water a week from today (March 17) when the they host the Hornet Invitational. The four-bat field will include San Diego State, Kansas State and Saint Mary's.
