ROWING COMPLETES 1ST DAY OF WIRAs, FOUR BOATS TO COMPETE IN TOMORROW’S GRAND FINALS

Saturday's WIRA Results/Sunday's Lane Assignments

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and a pair of varsity four entires each competed on the first day of the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships on Saturday at Lake Natoma.

Of those five Hornet boats, four will compete in a grand final tomorrow while the novice eight finished first in its petite final this afternoon.

Sacramento State's varsity eight finished fourth in this morning's heat with a time of 6:46.32, and will be slotted into its grand final tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. against Stanford Lightweights, Loyola Marymount, San Diego State, Saint Mary's Seattle and Santa Clara.

The Hornets' second varsity eight posted a time of 6:59.00 and finished fifth in its morning heat. The Hornets qualified for the grand final tomorrow morning at 9:30 a.m. where the team will race against San Diego State, Stanford Lightweights, Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's and Santa Clara.

Sacramento State's varsity four had a good day, finishing first in its heat with a time of 7:29.41, narrowly edging second-place San Diego State (7:30.49). The other four boats in the field each finished at least 18 seconds behind the Hornets' winning time. Sacramento State's second varsity four also raced in the heat, finishing with a 7:48.61. Both Hornet fours will compete in tomorrow's grand final at 10:20 a.m. against San Diego State, Saint Mary's A and B boats, and Santa Clara.

The novice eight qualified for a petite final after placing fifth in its heat with a 7:20.64. In that petite final, the Hornets raced to a winning time of 7:09.94, followed by Orange Coast College (7:10.83) and Santa Clara (7:19.72) to round out the top three in the six-boat field.

Times for the Hornets' races tomorrow morning are as follows - varsity eight (9 a.m.), second varsity eight (9:30 a.m.) and varsity four (10:20 a.m.).
