ROWING SWEEPS UC DAVIS, WINS ITS 13TH JEAN RUNYON CUP

WEST SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento State rowing squad swept all four races against UC Davis Saturday morning at the Port of Sacramento, winning by open water in the varsity eight, second varsity eight, novice eight and varsity four events.

The victory in the varsity eight allowed Sacramento State to claim its 13th Jean Runyon Cup, a prize both schools have battled for annually since 1997. The Hornets now own a 13-4 record against UC Davis over that span. The Aggies' rowing squad had been a varsity sport until 2010, and is currently its fourth year of club status.

In the varsity eight, Sacramento State's 2000-meter winning time of 6:47.5 was nearly 20 seconds faster than UC Davis' time of 7:07.1. That time of 6:47.5 was the fastest of the season for the Hornets' top boat, surpassing the previous high water mark of 6:48.2, set at the season-opening Sacramento State Invitational.

The varsity eight wasn't the only race the Hornets won handily, as Sacramento State also won by at least 12.7 seconds in each of the remaining three races.

In the second varsity eight, the Hornets' time of 7:00.0 was 28 seconds faster than the Aggies, the novice eight time of 7:34.0 was nearly a minute faster than UC Davis (8:29.7), and the varsity four competition saw the Hornets win with a time of 7:32.3, followed by the Aggies at 7:45.0.

Today was the final tune-up for the Conference USA Championships in which Sacramento State will compete on May 17 in Oak Ridge, Tenn. It will mark the first time the Hornets will compete in a NCAA-recognized conference championship regatta since gaining intercollegiate status in 1995, and the winner will receive an automatic berth into the NCAA Championship regatta.
