Sunday's Complete Results
GOLD RIVER, Calif. – The Sacramento State women's rowing squad claimed gold medals in the second varsity eight, varsity four and second novice eight, as well as a silver in the varsity eight to propel the Hornets to the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championship team tile on Sunday morning at Lake Natoma.
The WIRA's, which used to serve as the Hornets' conference championship, consisted of 34 schools this year. Sacramento State is in its first year of membership in Conference USA, and this marks the first time since the Hornets gained intercollegiate status in 1995 that the WIRA Championships do not serve as the program's conference championship regatta.
The victory allowed the Hornets to claim their fourth WIRA team championship in the last nine years (2006, 2007, 2009, 2014).
For Sacramento State, Kloey Glass and Jessica Smith were named first team all-WIRA while both Kim Gross and Carly Hartman were named to the second team.
Of Sacramento State's five entries into the regatta, four boats finished at least second place in their final while the novice eight placed fourth. Teams accumulate points based on finishes in grand finals, and the Hornets were successful enough to claim the team title with 360 points, followed by UC San Diego (309) and Portland (285) to round out the top three.
The Hornets' varsity eight, second varsity eight and novice eight had to finish among the top three boats in their heats yesterday to advance to their respective grand finals while the varsity four and second novice eight were each automatically slotted into their grand finals this morning.
The varsity eight, which medaled in the event for the fifth time in six years, finished second in its final with a 2,000-meter time of 6:57.27, trailing Stanford's Lightweight crew (6:53.00). Saint Mary's (6:59.50) finished third in the six-boat field.
The second varsity eight medaled at the regatta for the fourth consecutive year and took home gold for the first time since 2011 after finishing with a winning time of 6:53.10, followed by Saint Mary's (6:56.79) and Portland (6:57.63) to round out the top three in the six-boat field.
The varsity four's winning time of 7:38.60 was nearly 15 second faster than the next closest boat, the second novice eight posted a winning time of 7:28.90, and the novice four's fourth-place time was 7:20.65
