ROWING WRAPS UP THE FIRST DAY OF THE LAKE NATOMA INVITATIONAL

GOLD RIVER, Calif. -- Sacramento State's women's varsity eight, second varsity eight, varsity four and two novice eights all competed today in the first day of the Lake Natoma Rowing Invitational at the Sacramento State Aquatic Center.

The two-day, nine-team regatta features a powerhouse lineup highlighted by six nationally ranked teams, including the top two teams in the nation. Among those schools are top-ranked USC, second-ranked Cal, ninth-ranked Stanford, 12th-ranked Notre Dame, 15th-ranked Wisconsin and 17th-ranked Washington State. Kansas, who is receiving votes in the poll, is also competing at the regatta with Sacramento State and Tulsa. The Hornets are co-hosting the event with Cal.

All nine schools competed in a morning and afternoon session today, and were grouped into Sunday's grand finals, petite finals or third-level finals based on today's heats. Nearly every heat during both the morning and afternoon sessions were comprised of a three-boat field.

The varsity eight grand final, tomorrow morning's biggest race in magnitude, will take place at 9:40 a.m., and feature Cal, USC and Stanford.

Sacramento State's varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four will each race in third-level finals tomorrow morning. The Hornets' novice eight A and B entries will compete Sunday morning at 8 a.m., the team's varsity four will race at 8:20 a.m., the second varsity eight at 8:50 a.m., and the varsity eight at 9:20 a.m. The Hornets' novice eight A and B entries will compete in the petite final against Stanford and Cal's B boat. All the other finals for Sacramento State are third-level finals, and will see the Hornets take on Kansas and Tulsa in each of those races.

Sacramento State's varsity eight posted times of 7:10.6 in the morning, and 7:08.4 in the afternoon, but both times were only good enough for third place in the three-team field. The Hornets' second varsity eight posted times of 7:13.5 and 7:32.5, good for third place in both heats. The Hornets' novice eight A and B entries both finished fourth in their races with times of 7:42.7 and 8:06.1, respectively, while the varsity four posted third-place times of 8:01.1 in the morning and 8:31.5 in the afternoon.
