ROWING CONCLUDES SEASON WITH SECOND PLACE FINISH IN DAD VAIL PETITE FINAL

PHILADELPHIA -- The Sacramento State women's varsity eight concluded its season with a second-place showing in the Women's Varsity Heavyweight Eight petite final at the Dad Vail Regatta Saturday afternoon on the Schuylkill River.

Held annually since 1953 in Philadelphia, the Dad Vail Regatta is the largest collegiate regatta in the United States and includes over 3,500 student-athletes from up to 120 colleges and universities in North America and Canada. The regatta is held on Philadelphia's National Race Course.

The Hornets finished first in their heat yesterday to qualify for the semifinals. However, in the semis, the boat finished third, and only the top two boats from each of the three semifinals qualify for the grand final.

Instead, Sacramento State was slotted into the petite final, where it finished second with a time of 6:41.37. That time trailed only Purdue (6:39.46), but was faster than crews from Drexel, Connecticut, George Mason and Colgate.

In the semifinal earlier this morning, Sacramento State missed advancing to the grand final by less than two seconds. Bucknell (6:53.28) and Massachusetts (6:55.75) were able to qualify by virtue of finishing in the top two places while Sacramento State (6:57.08) and George Mason (7:06.75) advanced to the petite final after finishing third and fourth, respectively.

When all was said and done, of the 30 entries in the varsity heavyweight eight event, Sacramento State was the eighth fastest crew. The Hornets' varsity eight was competing in the Dad Vail Regatta for the eighth time in the last 11 years.

The boat accounted for a gold medal at the event in 2010, a sixth-place showing the last two years, a ninth-place finish in 2009, a silver medal in 2008, a gold in 2004 and an eighth-place finish in 2003.

The Hornets only travelled their varsity eight boat to the Dad Vail Regatta.
