Rowing's Varsity Eight Finishes Fourth in its Heat, Advances to Tomorrow's Petite Final

SAN DIEGO – The Sacramento State women's varsity eight posted the fourth fastest time in its heat during the first day of the San Diego Crew Classic Saturday morning at Crown Point Shores Park in Mission Bay. With the fourth place finish, the boat advanced to Sunday morning's petite final.

The team, however, will miss out on the grand final and the opportunity to capture its first Cal Cup championship since 2000.

In tomorrow morning's petite final, which takes place at 9:10 a.m., the Hornets' top boat will face Kansas State, St. Joseph's, Old Dominion, SMU and San Diego State. The Hornets' heat time this morning of 6:50.30 trailed Miami (6:36.77), British Columbia (6:45.69) and Saint Mary's (6:49.64), but was faster than crews from Old Dominion, San Diego State and Villanova. The top three teams in each of the two varsity eight heats advanced to the grand final, while the fourth, fifth and sixth place teams from the heats advance to the petite final. The Hornets missed out on an opportunity to advance to the grand final by less than a second.

Sacramento State's second varsity eight placed third in its heat, and will face Washington State, Duke, Iowa, Texas and San Diego in tomorrow morning's petite final at 8:20 a.m. Virginia (6:47.71) and UCLA (6:49.83) were the top two finishers in the Hornets' heat and Sacramento State's time of 7:08.44 was faster than crews from Texas, Miami and San Diego State.

Sacramento State's novice eight A boat placed fourth in its heat with a time of 7:29.83, and also advanced to its petite final tomorrow morning at 7:20 a.m. In the heat, the Hornets' time trailed Washington (6:57.70), Virginia (7:15.78) and Texas (7:26.66), but finished ahead of Minnesota's B boat. Sacramento State's novice eight will take on crews from USC, Washington State, Texas and Orange Coast College tomorrow in the petite final.

The Hornets' novice B boat placed sixth in its heat with a time of 7:41.31, and did not qualify for a final.
