SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State seniors Caitlin Brennan and Tess Heidig, and junior Karoline Sly were each recipients of the National Scholar-Athlete Award, it was announced today by the Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA).
The award recognizes rowing student-athletes with a 3.5 or higher cumulative grade point average, are at least a sophomore athletically, and have competed in 75 percent of the team's spring races. Brennan, who earned the award for the second straight year, became the 11th Hornet rower to receive the award multiple times.
All three rowers did not miss a race all spring with their respective boat, and helped Sacramento State to top three finishes in both the varsity eight and second varsity eight grand finals at the Western Intercollegiate Rowing Association (WIRA) Championships.
In her fourth season at Sacramento State, Brennan competed with the varsity eight, second varsity eight and varsity four boats during the spring season. She competed three times with the varsity eight (once in the three seat, twice in the five seat), six times with the second varsity eight (primarily in the four seat) and once with the varsity four (three seat). The San Jose, Calif., native has now made 21 appearances with the team's top boat dating back to her sophomore season. She finished her career having never missed a spring regatta during her four years with the program.
After missing the entire 2011 spring schedule because of an illness, Heidig came back strong in 2012 and helped the Hornets' second varsity eight to a silver medal at the WIRA Championships. The Sacramento native competed in three different seats with this year's JV8, including five races in the three seat, two races in the four seat, and one race at bow. She also made an appearance at three with the varsity four at the San Diego Crew Classic. During her sophomore season (2010), she didn't miss a race all year with the second varsity eight.
Sly, who was a pure novice last year, made the jump to the team's top boat in 2012. In fact, the Vacaville, Calif., native competed with the varsity eight in every spring race, sitting at bow during the boat's final 11 races after beginning the year in the three seat. She helped the boat to a bronze medal at the WIRA Championships. Sly competed in every spring race with the novice eight last year, and graduated to the Hornets' top boat this year.
