SEATTLE -- Sacramento State competed eight players at the ITA Northwest Regional Championships over the weekend in Seattle, and six players won at least one singles match, and three doubles teams were victorious.
The event featured 121 singles players, as well as 58 doubles teams from 16 schools across the northwest. The competing schools included California, Eastern Washington, Fresno State, Gonzaga, Oregon, Pepperdine, Portland, Portland State, Sacramento State, San Francisco, Santa Clara, Seattle, Saint Mary's, Stanford, UC Davis and Washington.
All matches were held at the Nordstrom Tennis Center as well as the Seattle Tennis Club.
The Hornets traveled all but one player on the roster, including seniors Donald Hall, Mikus Losbergs, Dom Miller and Bernardo Moraes, juniors Louis Chabut and Hermont Legaspi, and freshmen Abdulaziz Albayouk and Johannes Gjerdaker.
Chabut, Gjerdaker, Hall, Legaspi, Losbergs and Miller each picked up singles wins, highlighted by Losbergs and Miller posting 3-1 records at the event. Losbergs defeated a pair of opponents from Santa Clara and one from Portland, while Miller knocked off two opponents from Eastern Washington and one from Santa Clara. In three fall tournaments, Miller is now a combined 8-2 in singles play.
In doubles, the combinations of Losbergs/Miller, Chabut/Legaspi, and Gjerdaker/Hall each won a match and reached the Round of 32. Chabut/Legaspi defeated a doubles team from Washington, and narrowly fell to another Pac-12 team of Charles Roberts and Armando Soemarnu from Oregon, 8-7 (2). That Oregon team was a No. 5 seed at the tournament. Losbergs/Miller also recorded a win over a Pac-12 opponent, defeating Riki Oshima and Ethan Young-Smith of Oregon by an 8-6 score.
Overall, Sacramento State posted 10 singles victories and three doubles wins at the five-day event which ran from Thursday through Sunday.
"Our guys played four straight days, and competed hard," Sacramento State head coach Kevin Kurtz said. "They were ready to go every day and I was pleased with their effort and intensity level. We played a lot of close matches against solid competition and continue to get better every day."
All of Sacramento State's results from the tournament can be found below. The Hornets' fourth fall competition will take place in Moraga at the Saint Mary's Invitational from Oct. 26-28. Sacramento State will also play at the Bulldog Classic (Nov. 2-4) to wrap up the fall portion of the season.
