LOSBERGS NAMED BIG SKY PLAYER OF THE WEEK

SACRAMENTO, Calif. -- Sacramento State's Mikus Losbergs was named the Big Sky Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week after helping the Hornets to a road doubleheader split last Saturday, including a 6-1 victory at Portland State in the league opener.

The sophomore, who plays at No. 1 in both the Hornets' singles and doubles lineups, posted a 1-1 record in singles and 1-0 in doubles play. It marks the second straight week a Sacramento State player has earned the weekly honor as junior Christopher Clayton was recipient last week.

For Losbergs, who was a second team all-Big Sky choice a year ago, this marks his second career Big Sky weekly accolade (Jan. 20, 2016).

In the Hornets' 6-1 victory at Portland State, Losbergs defeated last year's Big Sky MVP Nathan Boniel in straight sets (6-4, 6-2). Losbergs had fallen to Boniel last season by a 6-2, 7-5 score. The Marupe, Latvia, native also teamed with Dom Miller to win at No. 1 doubles over Portland State's Boniel and Tommy Edwards by a 6-4 score.

Losbergs' only loss of the week came against Portland's Mike Pervolarakis who is currently ranked 66th in the nation in singles play. Doubles were not played in the match against Portland as the Hornets fell to the Pilots, 6-0.

Sacramento State returns to action on Friday for their home opener in doubleheader action against Southern Utah (10 a.m.) and North Dakota (2 p.m.). Those matches are scheduled to be played on campus. However, there is a high probability of rain on Friday. If it does rain, both matches will be moved indoors to the Spare Time Indoor Tennis Center where the Hornets will take on Southern Utah at 1 p.m., followed by North Dakota at 3:30 p.m.
