MORAGA, Calif. -- Sacramento State won four titles at the SMC Invitational on Saturday, including Dom Miller and Kasparas Zemaitelis winning their respective singles brackets. The tournament was the final competition of the fall for Sacramento State, which opens its spring season on Jan. 20.
Originally scheduled to be a three-day tournament from Friday through Sunday, the tournament was played exclusively on Saturday because of rain.
Since the tournament was condensed to just one day, there were numerous four-player singles brackets set up, and Sacramento State had a player in eight of those competitions. That included Mikus Losbergs (A bracket), Louis Chabut (B), Christopher Clayton (D), Miller (F), Hermont Legaspi (G), Donald Hall (J), Zemaitelis (L) and Izik Walsh (N). Each of those eight Hornets posted at least one victory in their respective singles bracket.
That included Miller and Zemaitelis, who both went 2-0 in to win their respective brackets. Miller defeated players from UC Davis and Fresno State to win the F Bracket. The final round win came over Fresno State's Patrik Pech, 4-6, 6-2 and 12-10 in the super tiebreaker. Zemaitelis won the L bracket with victories over players from Pacific and Holy Names. That included a final round victory over Holy Names' Hugo Colpart, 5-7, 6-2 and 10-5 in the super tiebreak.
Chabut had a big comeback in the first round of his draw, defeating UC Davis' James Wade, 7-6 (5), 2-6, and 11-9. Chabut had trailed in the super tiebreaker, 9-6, before running off five straight points to win the match.
Zemaitelis accounted for two tournament titles and posted a perfect 4-0 record, as he teamed with Clayton to go 2-0 and win the C doubles bracket. The tandem beat a team from Saint Mary's in the semifinals, 6-2, before knocking off UC Davis' David Goulak and Bryce McKelvie, 7-5, in the championship match.
Also winning a doubles title was Hall and Walsh in the F bracket. That included a 6-3 victory over Santa Clara's Max Heerinckx and Sebastian Mathieu in the championship match.
Sacramento State's other two doubles teams were Losbergs/Miller and Chabut/Legaspi, and both of those teams went 1-1.
Not only did all eight Hornets win at least one match in the singles draw, but all four Sacramento State doubles teams picked up at least one victory in the doubles draw. Between singles and doubles play, Sacramento State players combined to post a 16-8 record at the tournament.
The Hornets do not play again until Friday, Jan. 20, when the Hornets travel to Fresno for a doubleheader at Fresno State at 10 a.m., followed by a matchup against UC Davis at 2 p.m.
