MARKSOO WILL ENTER SEASON WITH HIGHEST CAREER NATIONAL RANKING
ITA National Singles Rankings
SACRAMENTO, Calif. — Junior Marek Marksoo, who became the fourth player in Sacramento State men's tennis history to receive a national singles ranking last year, will enter the 2013-14 season as the 89th ranked Div. I singles player in the nation.
The Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) ranks the top 125 players in the nation, and Marksoo's name in the 89th spot surpasses his previous high of No. 113.
The other three players in Sacramento State history to receive a national ranking include Kiryl Harbatsiuk (2008-11), Jason Smith (2009-11) and Anton Stryhas (2007-10).
Last season, as a sophomore, Marksoo was named the Big Sky Conference's co-MVP and first team all-league after finishing with a 16-3 singles record. He won each of his final 13 singles matches of the year, all at the No. 1 spot in the team's lineup.
A three-time Big Sky Player of the Week selection, he provided match-clinching, three-set victories in 4-3 wins over Fresno State, Loyola Marymount, Saint Mary's and UC Davis.
A native of Tallinn, Estonia, he was selected to compete for his home country in the Davis Cup last February. In the process, Marksoo became the first player in school history to compete at the prestigious event.
Marksoo helped lead Sacramento State to Big Sky regular season and tournament titles last year, as well as a spot in the NCAA Tournament. He is one of five returners in 2013-14 who competed consistently in the team's six-man singles lineup last season.
