LATE SCORE ENDS SEASON FOR MEN’S SOCCER ON THE ROAD AT UC DAVIS, 1-0

DAVIS, Calif. – Sacramento State and UC Davis were scoreless for 84 minutes Saturday afternoon, but a late Aggies goal proved the difference as the Hornets fell, 1-0, on the road in Davis.

With the loss, Sacramento State fell to 7-9-2 overall and 2-4-1 in the Big West. UC Davis improved to 11-4-2 overall and 5-1-1 in conference play.

A win or a draw on Saturday for the Hornets would have guaranteed Sacramento State a spot in the Big West Conference tournament. The loss, however, coupled with wins by both CSUN and Fal State Fullerton on Saturday night, ended the Hornets' season. Sacramento State finished seventh in the Big West - the top six teams in the league advance to the postseason tournament.

Saturday afternoon's action in Davis was back and forth from the beginning, with both teams finding opportunities to attack before retreating to defend. After 45 minutes, the match remained scoreless with the two teams nearly identical on the box score.

The second half started with more of the same, but UC Davis slowly began to take control of the match. In the 62nd minute, an Aggies goal was negated by an offsides call. Just moments later in the 66th, Sacramento State's Luis Urias made a crucial defensive save on a UC Davis shot to keep the match even.

It was in the 84th minute that UC Davis' attack finally broke through as the Aggies' Jake Haupt found the back of the net on a shot after a long throw, punching one in from up close by the near post.

In total, Sacramento State was outshot, 19-10, including 11-5 in the second half. The Aggies also led in shots on goal, 4-3. Both teams had four corner kick opportunities.

RJ Moorhouse, Titus Washington, and Genaro Alfaro led the Hornets with two shots each. Sacramento State was without two of its top midfielders – Matt Carnefix and Oscar Govea – for the season finale, as well.

The Hornets will now watch the rest of the league to see when and where they will play next. The Big West Conference tournament begins Wednesday, Nov. 6. Full details on the tournament are available online at BigWest.org.
