MEN'S SOCCER DROPS WEDNESDAY MATCH TO CAL POLY, 1-0
SACRAMENTO, Calif. – Sacramento State celebrated Senior Day on Wednesday, recognizing the team's four graduating seniors before the match. Unfortunately, despite the positive pregame ceremonies, the Hornets were unable to continue the celebration, falling 1-0 to Cal Poly.
With the loss, Sacramento State falls to 6-8-2 overall and 1-3-1 in Big West play. The win was Cal Poly's third straight victory as the Mustangs improved to 7-6-1 overall and 3-2-0 in conference.
With two matches remaining in the regular season for Sacramento State, the Big West postseason picture is beginning to take shape. Currently, the Hornets sit in fifth in the league. The top six advance to the postseason.
Prior to Wednesday's match, the Sacramento State men's soccer team celebrated senior day, recognizing the program's four graduating seniors: Christian Guzman, Luis Urias, Matt Carnefix, and Mac Harrington. The four have a combined 11 seasons of Hornets soccer between them and more than 150 matches played.
Wednesday's match remained scoreless for 68 minutes before Cal Poly found the game-winner in the 69th. It was Spencer Held with a big right foot from the corner of the 18, driving a perfectly placed shot into the far top corner, past the outstretched arms of a diving Ryan Curtis.
Sacramento State and Cal Poly were mostly balanced on the score sheet. The Mustangs led in possession, though just barely, 51% to 49%. Cal Poly also led in shots, though again, not by a wide margin, just 10-7.
The biggest difference came in shots on frame. Despite finding opportunities - especially in the second half - not one of Sacramento State's shots was on goal. Five of Cal Poly's 10 were placed on frame.
Wednesday's action was the last at Hornet Field during the regular season. Sacramento State closes out the regular season on the road with matches at UC Riverside and UC Davis.
