FULLERTON, Calif. – The Sacramento State men's soccer team took on the defending Big West tournament champion Cal State Fullerton Titans Saturday night. Despite a number of second half opportunities, the Hornets fell 1-0 on the road in Southern California.
The loss drops the Hornets to 2-2 in Big West Conference play and 4-8-2 overall. With the win, Fullerton improves to 2-1-1 in conference competition and 6-3-6 overall.
The Titans were in control for much of the first half, maintaining possession and spending most of the half on the Hornets' end of the field. Sacramento State was outshot in the first half, 8-1, including 3-1 in shots on goal.
The two teams went into halftime with the match still scoreless, but things changed just 18 seconds into the second period as Fullerton struck for the match's only goal in the 46th minute.
A quick through ball by the Titans' midfield turned into a one-on-one situation for Fullerton's Samuel Goni. Sacramento State's keeper Ryan Curtis came out to meet the attack but was beat by a hard low shot into the far corner.
Curtis made five total saves against six shots on goal. The freshman keeper has made 26 total saves in four conference matches while allowing four goals.
The Hornets had a number of great looks in the second half, placing five shots on goal, but were unable to find the equalizer before time expired and the match went final.
Justin Bedig led the team with two shots, placing both of them on goal. Five other Hornets added a shot as the team continued to get multiple players involved in the offense.
Since the start of conference play, 12 different Hornets have placed a shot on goal while three different players – Matt Carnefix, Abraham Rosales, and Tone Andres – have scored a goal. All three of those goals have come in just two games, however, as Sacramento State has been shutout twice in four Big West contests.
Sacramento State's next match is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 17 at Cal Poly. Kick off is set for 7:00 pm. For more details and the full schedule, please visit the 2018 Sacramento State Men's Soccer page online at HornetSports.com.
