SACRAMENTO — Sacramento State's Mac Harrington scored with 44 seconds left in regulation to tie, and Trevor Jackson's penalty kick goal with eight seconds left in overtime highlighted a thrilling 2-1 victory over Loyola Marymount in the second and final round of the Copa de Causeway men's soccer tournament on Sunday afternoon.
The Hornets finished the event with a 1-1 record, which included a 2-0 loss to San Diego on Friday. It was San Diego who won the tournament with a perfect 2-0 record after beating UC Davis, 2-1, earlier today. Both the Hornets and Aggies finished in a tie for second place with a 1-1 record, and Loyola Marymount was fourth with an 0-2 record.
For Sacramento State, both Harrington and Paul Geyer were named to the all-tournament team.
In a game that featured a combined 28 shots, 32 fouls, five yellow cards and an abundance of tense moments, it was the Hornets that finally got on the board at the 89:16 mark of the second half. Justin Bedig sent in a free kick from 30 yards away that was headed by Brad Bumgarner to Harrington's right foot as he sent a chest high kick into the back of the net past a defender and LMU keeper Collin Partee to tie the score at 1-1.
The Lions had taken a 1-0 lead when Sarkis Shaginian scored off a corner kick from Rodrigo San Roman. It was one of just five shots on goal for the Lions, who also had a 12-3 advantage over the Hornets in corner kicks.
Sacramento State was able to win late in the first overtime session after Geyer sent in a corner kick that found the feet of Matt Carnefix. The sophomore midfielder got past one LMU defender and was taken down in the box by a second defender with just eight seconds left on the clock. Jackson then stepped up and delivered a penalty kick shot past Partee that found the back of the net, setting off a Hornet celebration.
Making the win even sweeter is it came on a day in which Sacramento State welcomed it newest member to the program, 13-year old Talon Bonanno who received his jersey before the game and was named the honorary team captain. Many of the Hornet players celebrated with Bonanno on the field after the victory. Bonanno was diagnosed with neuroblastoma in March, and has gone through six rounds of chemotherapy. Despite the adversity, he passed the eighth grade with flying colors and has become an inspirational member of the Hornet program. Today was also Kids Day at Hornet Field, as Bonanno and the rest of the Sacramento State team signed posters at the conclusion of the game.
The win also allowed the Hornets to move their record to 2-3-0 this season while Loyola Marymount dropped to 1-4-1. LMU outshot Sacramento State, 15-13, but the Hornets had nine shots on goal compared to five for the Lions.
The Hornets return to action next week on the road when they play Utah Valley on Friday. That game marks the beginning of a three-game road trip as Sacramento State does not play at home again until Sept. 28.
