SACRAMENTO, Calif. - For the second consecutive season the Sacramento State men's soccer team will get a chance to host local USL Pro team Sacramento Republic FC at Hornet Field when the teams meet in a Friendly at 3 p.m. Wednesday.
"We're excited to play the Republic again," Sacramento State head coach Michael Linenberger said. "We've had a great relationship with them since they came into existence and they are gracious enough to allow us to play them every spring. Its great for our program and it's a great measuring stick for our players, many of whom have ambitions to become a pro."
The teams played in front of a near capacity crowd at Hornet Field last February. The Hornets played step-for-step with the Republic in a 1-0 loss, holding the USL Pro team to just one goal and scoreless over the last 77 minutes of the game.
"Last year was the first year that we advertised the game and charged admission and we ended up having a fantastic crowd and a great environment," Linenberger said. "We make a little money as a fundraiser for our program but more importantly it gives our guys a great setting for a spring game and it's a great event for the Sacramento soccer community."
The Republic will be training for their USL season, which begins in late March. Sacramento State's returning players and its spring newcomers will have a chance to face elite talent and further build their partnership with the local pro team.
General admission for the game will be $10 while Sacramento State students, faculty, and staff can purchase tickets for $5 with a valid OneCard. Tickets are available now at the Hornet Ticket Office in the Athletics Center, over the phone at (916) 278-4323, and online.
Free parking for the game will be available in Lot 10. Other lots are also open with purchase of a day permit. Hornet Soccer Field is located on the northwest corner of campus near the softball stadium and the intramural fields. The nearest parking lot is Lot 1.
