IRVINE, Calif. - For the third time this season, Sacramento State junior goalkeeper James Del Curto has been named Big West Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday.
Del Curto becomes just the 10th player in conference history to receive three Big West Player of the Week awards in one season. He previously earned the accolade Sept. 12 and Oct. 3, and as a team the Hornets now have five Player of the Week honors this season with seniors Ivan Ramirez and Alex Bettencourt previously garnering the offensive award.
Del Curto helped the Hornets clinch a Big West Tournament berth with two wins last week. On Wednesday he made two saves and controlled the box in the 1-0 Hornet shutout of Cal Poly. He had to come out of the game after being hit in the head and drawing blood in the second half, but he came back on the field less than seven minutes later to finish the shutout.
The Santa Rosa native was sensational on Saturday, making six big saves in the 2-1 Hornet win at UC Davis. Five of the six saves were spectacular diving stops, getting the Hornets a win despite being outshot 20-8 overall. The win extended the Hornets unbeaten streak at rival UC Davis to four games (3-0-1).
