IRVINE, Calif. - Sacramento State junior goalkeeper James Del Curto has been named Big West Defensive Player of the Week for the second time this season, the conference announced Monday.
The Hornets have now had a Big West Player of the Week honor in four consecutive weeks. Del Curto earned his first on Sept. 12 before seniors Alex Bettencourt and Ivan Ramirez took home the Offensive Player of the Week honor over the last two weeks.
Del Curto matched the NCAA Div. I single game high this season with 14 saves in Sacramento State's 2-1 win on Thursday night at UC Irvine. He notched eight saves in the first half and six in the second half to tie his career high, which was set last year in a similar win over the Anteaters in Sacramento.
Del Curto was credited with seven saves in just the first 15 minutes of the game, withstanding the early barrage and allowing his team to take a 2-0 lead. The Anteaters got one goal back in the second half but that was all Del Curto would allow. In a much different game at CSUN on Saturday, the Hornet defense permitted just two shots on goal from the Matadors.
Sacramento State is back home this week hosting Cal State Fullerton on Thursday and UC Riverside on Saturday.
