IRVINE, Calif. - With a three goal, one assist weekend leading the Hornets to a win over No. 15 Utah Valley and the Copa De Causeway title senior midfielder Ivan Ramirez was selected as the Big West Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week on Monday.
The Hornets earned Big West Player of the Week honors for the third consecutive week. Senior Alex Bettencourt won the offensive honor last week after junior goalkeeper James Del Curto earned the Defensive Player of the Week honor two weeks ago.
Ramirez continued his sensational senior season and led the Hornets to a win over a ranked team for the second consecutive year. He had a hand in all three Hornet goals in the 3-2 upset of the Wolverines, scoring the first and third goals and assisting on the second.
He set the tone with a goal just 2:07 into the game, helped make the score 2-0 with an assist in the 7th minute and, after Utah Valley equalized, scored the game winner in the 41st minute. He was involved in three goals against a Utah Valley team that had allowed just five total goals through its first seven games of the season.
On Saturday he gave the Hornets an early lead again, converting a penalty kick in the 10th minute against Saint Mary's. He had two more shots on goal in the game and nearly had another winner in overtime if not for a sensational diving save by the Gaels goalkeeper.
His goal against Saint Mary's and the subsequent 1-1 draw gave the Hornets the Copa De Causeway tournament title. Ramirez has scored and had multiple points in three straight games, totaling four goals and two assists for 10 points in the last three Hornet matches.
