BETTENCOURT NAMED BIG WEST MEN’S SOCCER OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK

Big West Release

IRVINE, Calif. - After scoring two game-winning goals and adding an assist in two home wins Sacramento State senior forward Alex Bettencourt was selected as the Big West Offensive Player of the Week.

Sacramento State earned a Big West Player of the Week honor for the second consecutive week, as junior goalkeeper James Del Curto earned Defensive Player of the Week honors last Monday.

In his first two home games as a Hornet, the senior transfer from Modesto JC made an immediate impact. He scored the game-winning goal in Sacramento State's 2-1 come-from-behind win over Portland on Thursday, putting home a rebound on a shot by Brad Bumgarner in the 90th minute to give the Hornets the lead with just 45 seconds left in regulation time.

A native of Hilmar, Bettencourt was involved in two of the three Hornet goals in the team's 3-2 win over San José State on Sunday. He helped give the Hornets the early lead, assisting on an 18th minute score by senior Ivan Ramirez. He later scored what ended up being the game-winning goal, finishing a pass from Ramirez with a redirection in the goal mouth in the 49th minute.

Bettencourt has scored the game-winning goal in each of Sacramento States three wins this year. He leads the Big West and is tied for third in NCAA Div. I with his three game-winning goals.
