IRVINE, Calif. - Sacramento State sophomore forward Brad Bumgarner has been named to the preseason Big West all-Conference team announced by the league on Wednesday.
Bumgarner becomes the third Hornet men's soccer play named preseason all-Big West, joining former Hornets Cesar Castillo in 2012 and Isaac Ikyurav in 2013. He is one of 11 players from the eight Big West teams that were named to the preseason team. He is one of just two sophomores named to the team.
As a redshirt freshman last season Bumgarner was named to the Freshman all-Big West team after leading the Hornets and tying for second in the Big West with seven goals and three game-winning goals. Bumgarner scored on three of his first four career shots on goal and totaled four goals and one assist in Big West play, while his seven goals equaled the most any Hornet player has scored in a season since 2010.
In 2015 Bumgarner tied for the team lead with 29 shots and ranked second with 13 shots on goal, scoring on 54% of his shots on goal. He had a goal and an assist in Sacramento State's 5-2 upset of No. 13 UC Santa Barbara and scored the game-winning goal in Sacramento State's 1-0 home win over rival UC Davis.
The Big West also released its Preseason Coaches' Poll where the Hornets were picked to finish fourth in the North Division. UC Santa Barbara was tabbed the favorite to win the division while Cal State Fullerton was picked to win the South.
Sacramento State has one more exhibition game Saturday night at Santa Clara before opening the regular season on Aug. 26 at CSU Bakersfield. Big West play for the Hornets begins Sept. 29 at UC Irvine.
