FRESNO, Calif. — Ethan Davidson used a career best round of 67 to finish in 24th place and lead the Sacramento State men's golf team at the Nick Watney Invitational on Tuesday.

Davidson's 4-under par round helped the Hornets finish 4-under as a team during the third round. Sacramento State shot 292-284-280-856 to finish in 10th place out of 15 teams. The Hornets were just 4-over par during the tournament but could not keep pace with BYU which won the championship at 30-under par. The Cougars were 16-under on Tuesday and were led by a round of 62 from Rhett Rasmussen.

Davidson started the final round on the 10th hole and jumped out to great start with birdies on the par-3 11th, par-4 15th and par-5 16th. He moved to 5-under with birdies on the par-4 first and second holes and remained there until a bogey on the par-4 fourth. Davidson, however, birdied the par-4 fifth to get back to 5-under before being slowed by bogeys on Nos. 7 and 8. He closed his round with a birdie on the par-5 ninth leaving him at 4-under. His round of 67 broke his previous low of 69 which was set twice last season. He also smashed his 54-hole low by shooting 73-71-67-211, His previous best was 216 at the Big Sky Championship and Nick Watney Invitational last season.

Jeff Carr ranked second on the team at 73-71-70-214 to tie for 30th place. Carr was 2-under at the midway point of his round with birdies on the par-4 13th, 15th and 18th holes a bogey on the par-5 16th. He started the front nine with consecutive bogeys on Nos. 1 and 2 to take him to even par. After six pars, he ended with a birdie on the par-4 ninth.

Casey Leebrick matched Carr's score during the third round and tied for 50th overall at 76-70-71-217. Leebrick opened play with a par on No. 13 and then had bogeys on the next two holes. He returned to even with birdies on the par-5 16th and par-3 17th before back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 1 and 2.The sophomore played his next nine holes at 3-under with birdies on the par-4 fifth, par-5 ninth and par-4 10th. After a par on No. 11, he bogeyed the par-5 12th to finish even.

Joe Fowler matched his 72 from the second round and tied for 53rd place at 74-72-72-218. Fowler started quickly with a birdie on the par-3 10th on his first hole. He added a birdie on No. 13 before his first bogey on No. 14. Fowler then parred is next five holes but moved to 2-over with a double bogey on the par-4 second and a bogey on the par-4 sixth. The sophomore birdied the par-5 ninth to close at 1-over.

Jonathan Tanihana shot 73 while competing as an individual with two birdies and four bogeys. Christian James completed the lineup with a 78.

Sacramento State will next compete at the Bill Cullum Invitational on Oct. 14-15 in Simi Valley, Calif.
