BOULDER CITY, Nev. — The Sacramento State men's golf team was 1-under par during the second round of the Big Sky Championship and finds itself in the middle of a crowded leaderboard with one round remaining. The Hornets are in fifth place at even par but are just one stroke out of third place and four from second. Northern Colorado was 11-under par on Saturday and owns an 11-stroke lead through two rounds.
Ethan Davidson posted the lowest round for Sacramento State on Saturday and moved into a tie for 10th place. The freshman parred his first four holes and made his move with birdies on the par-5 fifth and par-4 seventh. He traded a bogey and birdie on his final two holes on the front nine to make the turn at 2-under. After a bogey on No. 10 and a par on No. 11, Davidson birdied three consecutive holes to get to 4-under. He started on the par-3 12th and followed with the par-5 13th and par-4 14th. He had pars on three of his final four holes with the exception being a bogey on the par-5 16th.
Jeff Carr added a 2-under par round of 70 for a five-shot improvement between round one and two. Carr jumped out quickly with birdies on the par-5 second, par-4 third and par-5 fifth. A double-bogey on the par-4 ninth momentarily halted his momentum but he answered back with an eagle on the 579-yard 13th hole and a birdie on the par-4 14th. He alternated pars and bogeys over his final four holes.
Riley Bell remains the overall leader for the the Hornets and is tied for fourth place overall after shooting 71. Bell's two-round total of 140 leaves him two shots off a trio of golfers which are tied for first place. The freshman struggled over his first nine holes with two bogeys and a double bogey. He dominated the back nine, playing the final seven holes at 5-under par with birdies on Nos. 12, 13, 15, 17 and 18.
Josh Diaz and Joe Fowler each shot 77 on Saturday for the final team score. Diaz had three birdies, six bogeys and a double bogey during his round. Fowler's total was comprised of five birdies, five bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey.
Sacramento State will start it's third round at 7:45 a.m. on Sunday. The team will be paired with Southern Utah during the day with the final twosome going off the first tee at 8:21 a.m.
