MEN'S GOLF FINISHES 11TH AT EL MACERO CLASSIC; CHOI LEADS TEAM IN FINAL ROUND

EL MACERO, Calif. — The Sacramento State men's golf team completed its final tournament before the Big Sky Championships on Sunday with the final round of the El Macero Classic. The team battled high winds throughout the morning and was led by a 75 from Wonje Choi. The Hornets finished the tournament in 11th place with a three round total of 322-313-315-950.

Choi posted his best round of the event and finished tied for 53rd at 83-78-75-235. The senior started with a bogey on the 10th hole but immediately followed with a birdie on the par-4 11th. He had a double bogey on par-4 13th and a birdie on the par-4 14th before making the turn at 1-over. Choi alternated bogeys and pars over the first six holes on the front side of the course to stand at 4-over before a birdie on the par-3 seventh.

Ash Patel had the highest finish on the team with a tie for 45th place (76-80-76-232). Patel was 2-over through his first four holes but was even at the midway point of his round with birdies on the par-5 15th and 18th. A pair of bogeys and double bogeys took him to 6-over with only two holes to play but Patel rallied with birdies on the par-4 eighth and ninth.

Jeff Carr ranked third on the team with a 78 on Sunday. Carr's round was comprised of four birdies, six bogeys and a pair of double bogeys. The freshman finished the tournament in 60th place with a total of 81-80-78-239.

Zach Liberatore and Brandon Michaels each shot 86 to complete the lineup for the team. Liberatore tied for 69th with rounds of 84-75-86-245. On Sunday he had eight bogeys and three double bogeys. Michaels tied for 76th at 82-83-86-251. He had nine bogeys, a double bogey and a triple bogey in the third round.

Nevada finished first in the team standings at 15-over par. UCLA, which is ranked 24th, finished second at 25-over while 12th-ranked Texas Tech and Cal State Fullerton were two strokes back in a tie for third.

Nevada accounted for the top two individuals with Sam Meek and Grant Booth finishing first and second. Meek finished the tournament at 1-under par while Booth was even.

The team will have nearly two weeks off before competing at the Big Sky Championships in Boulder City, Nev., on April 27-29.
