CHOI, OLSEM LEAD MEN'S GOLF IN FIRST DAY OF THE FARMS INVITATIONAL

RANCHO SANTE FE, Calif. — Wonje Choi and Eric Olsem each stand at 4-over par following the first day of The Farms Invitational to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team on Monday. Choi was the most consistent golfer for the Hornets, ranking second on the team in both rounds with a total of 72-76-148. Olsem shot 78 in the opening round by came back with a team-leading 73 in the afternoon.

Sacramento State is in ninth place after the first day at 26-over. The Hornets were just 5-over during the first round, counting four scores between 70 and 76. The afternoon round saw scores escalate across the board and the team shot 21-over. The second round was stopped due to darkness with Sacramento State having one athlete on the course with one hole to play.

Choi started the first round off the 10th tee and made the turn at 1-over par following a birdie on the par-4 11th and bogeys on the par-3 14th and par-4 17th. He moved to 2-over after a bogey on the par-3 second but rallied with birdies on the par-5 third and par-3 fifth. Choi was also 1-over on the back nine in the second round. He birdied the 11th for the second time and had bogeys on Nos. 15 and 16. On the front side, he had a pair of bogeys and a double bogey to stand at 5-over par for the day before ending with a birdie on the par-5 ninth.

Olsem opened play on the 13th hole and was 2-over through his first five holes. He birdied the par-5 18th to take him to 1-over and remained there after a bogey on the par-3 second and a birdie on the par-3 fifth. Olsem closed the round with a pair of bogeys on Nos. 7 and 10. His second round started with a bogey on No. 13 but he drew even with his second birdie on the 18th. He jumped to 3-over with a bogey on the par-4 first and a double bogey on the par-5 third. However, birdies on the par-4 sixth and par-5 ninth dropped him back to 1-over where he finished.

Jeff Carr had the best round of the day for Sacramento State with a 2-under par 70 for his season best. Carr parred his first four holes before a birdie on the par-5 18th. Bogeys on Nos. 2 and 7 brought him to 1-over par with six holes to play. He surged with an eagle on the 486-yard par-5 ninth and followed with a birdie on the par-4 10th. Carr stands at 9-over in the second round with one hole remaining. His second round had two birdies, two double bogeys and two triple bogeys.

Devyn Fitchhorn birdied his first two holes and three of his first five with just one bogey. However, those were the last of his round as he had four bogeys and a double bogey over his final 11 holes. In the second round, Fitchhorn had two birdies, four bogeys, a double bogey and a pair of triple bogeys.

Zach Liberatore shot 84 in the first round with a birdies, five bogeys, a double bogey and a sextuple bogey. Liberatore was five shots better in the second round. He birdied the par-5 12th on his second hole and later birdied the par-5 ninth. In between those were seven bogeys and a double bogey.

The third round will start with a shotgun start at 8:45. Sacramento State will be paired with Wichita State, Idaho and individuals.
