MEN'S GOLF CONCLUDES PLAY AT SEASON OPENING TOURNAMENT

PULLMAN, Wash. — Sophomore Zak Sievers shot 73 to lead the Sacramento State men's golf team in the final round of the Itani Homes Collegiate at Palouse Ridge Golf Club on Tuesday.

The Hornets ended the tournament in 11th place with a tournament total of 295-286-298-879 and finished 27-over par. Washington Sate was able to come back in the final round of the tournament finishing 33-under to beat Boise State by one stroke. The rest of the top five was comprised of Long Beach State (831), Cal State Fullerton (840) and South Dakota (840).

Sievers finished the tournament tied for 44th with rounds of 74-73-73-220. He started the final day by playing his first 10 holes at 1-under with nine pars and a birdieon the par-3 16th. His first bogey of the day came on the par-3 sixth which returned him to even par. From there, he parred three consecutive holes but ended with bogeys on Nos. 11 and 12 and a par on the 13th.

The other four golfers in the lineup each shot a 4-over par round of 75 on Tuesday. Ash Patel finished the tournament tied for 28th with a score of 70-70-75-215. Patel, who was 1-under par in the first two rounds, opened with a double bogey on his first hole (par-3 13th). He was able to par three of his next six holes but had bogeys on the par-3 16th and par-5 18th. Patel was 4-over after his first six holes but was able to par the next seven holes before a bogey on par-4 8th. He recorded his second eagle of the tournament on par-5 10th but closed with a bogey on the par-3 11th and a par on No. 12.

Wonje Choi tied for 44th overall after shooting 75-70-75-220. Choi started with a bogey on par-3 13th and par-4 15th. Choi bogeyed two of his first three holes (Nos. 13 and 15) but returned to even with birdies on the par-3 16th and par-5 18th. He had 10 pars over his final 12 holes but was slowed by a bogey on the par-3 fourth and a triple-bogey on the par-5 fifth.

Zach Liberatore tied for 59th place at 76-73-75-224. After starting on the 15th with two pars he had a double bogey on the par-4 17th. Bogeys on Nos. 1 and 3 moved him to 3-over before he rallied off eight consecutive pars. His day ended with back-to-back bogeys on Nos. 12 and 13 and a birdie on the par-4 14th.

Brandon Michaels completed the lineup with his second consecutive round of 75. Michaels was even through seven holes with birdies on Nos. 18 and 2, four pars and a double bogey on the par-4 17th. A double bogey on No. 5 took him to 2-over and he quickly jumped to 4-over following bogeys on Nos. 6 and 8. He responded with seven straight pars to end his round.

Donny Hopoi of Boise State shot a 5-under par round of 66 on Tuesday to become the medalist. Hopoi totaled 71-63-66-200 to finish two strokes ahead of the rest of the field.

Sacramento State will return to action on Sunday at the Golfweek Conference Challenge in Burlington, Iowa. The tournament will feature a team from 15 NCAA Div. I conferences and will be held at Spirit Hollow GC.
