PULLMAN, Wash. — Newcomer Ash Patel led the Sacramento State men's golf team with two rounds of 70 during the first day of the Itani Homes Collegiate on Monday at Palouse Ridge Golf Club.
The Hornets currently sit in 10th place with a first day total of 295-286-581 and are 13-over par. Boise State shot 19-under as a team in the second round to build a 7-stroke lead over host Washington State. The rest of the top five is comprised of Long Beach State (554), Cal State Fullerton (561) and South Dakota (561).
Patel, who transferred from Cal State Stanislaus following last season, started his day with six consecutive pars on Nos. 11-16. He was 1-over through nine holes with a bogey on the par-4 17th, a birdie on the par-5 18th and a bogey on the par-4 1st. Following two pars, he surged to 1-under with back-to-back birdies on the par-3 fourth and par-5 fifth. He ended the round with five more pars. During the afternoon, Patel was 2-over through his first four holes and remained there after a birdie on No. 15 and a bogey on the 16th. A birdie on the 17th led to an eagle on No. 18 to take him to 1-under. After four pars, he dropped to 2-under during the round with a birdie on No. 5. However, a double-bogey on the par-4 eighth moved him back to even par before he ended the day with a birdie on the 10th.
Wonje Choi ranked second on the team and is tied for 33rd place at 75-70-145. Choi parred Nos. 10-17 to start his day but never had a birdie on the opening round. He finished with four bogeys to accompany 14 pars. The senior wasted little time getting a birdie in the afternoon, recording one on the par-5 10th. He was 2-under at the turn with a stretch of three birdies over holes Nos. 14-18. A double bogey on the par-4 first moved him to even for the round but he bounced back with birdies on the par-4 second and par-3 fourth surrounding a bogey on No. 3.
Sophomore Zak Sievers, a transfer from Folsom Lake JC, shot 74-73-147 and is tied for 43rd place. Sievers was 1-under through his first nine holes with a bogey on the par-3 11th and an eagle on No. 18. His final nine holes consisted of six pars with bogeys on No. 3 and the par-3 sixth as well as a double bogey on the par-5 fifth. His second round again started strongly with a pair of birdies (Nos. 3 and 15) and four pars over his first six holes. However, he then bogeyed Nos. 17, 18 and 1 to move to 1-over and jumped to 3-over with his second double bogey on the fifth. Sievers recovered over the final five holes with a birdie on the par-5 ninth and four pars.
Zach Liberatore is tied for 54th place at 76-73-149. The senior was 2-over through his first six holes but got a stroke back with the team's only birdie on the par-4 15th in the opening round. Bogeys on Nos. 17 and 1 took him to 3-over before a birdie on the par-4 second (also the only one by a Hornet in the round). From there, he had four pars, a bogey and a double bogey on his final six holes. In the second round, Liberatore was 2-over through nine holes with bogeys on the 10th and 11th. He moved to even following birdies on the par-5 18th and par-4 first. His final seven holes were comprised of a birdie, four pars, a bogey and a double bogey.
Brandon Michaels carded rounds of 76-75-151 in his collegiate debut. Michaels opened the morning with a bogey on No. 12 and was 7-over through his first 11 holes before getting back on track. He closed his round with a birdie on the fifth, a bogey on seventh and back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10 and 11. In the second round, he was 2-over through three holes but moved to 1-over with birdies on Nos. 18 and 1. He encountered trouble with a bogey on the par-4 third and a double bogey on the par-5 fifth to move to 3-over but ended with a birdie on the par-4 eighth.
Thomas Vining of South Dakota shot 68-64-132 to lead the tournament by two strokes.
The tournament will conclude Tuesday with the third round. Sacramento State will be paired with British Columbia and five individuals in the shotgun start which gets underway at 8:30 a.m.
